Lonely Planet review
Leisure-seeking folk once flocked to the Pioneer Theatre to be entertained by the latest film offerings. Since the iconic Art-Deco theatre was transformed into a hostel, they've been flocking here to laze around the swimming pool and soak up the friendly, down-to-earth atmosphere.
The glory days of the Pioneer as an outdoor movie theatre, when films were screened in an inner courtyard, are long gone, a fact exemplified by the building's weathered frontage. But this YHA-managed accommodation has worked hard to retain the original theatre's air of relaxation and conviviality, making sure that the hostel didn't become plagued by the noisy exuberance that dominates other backpacker-beloved places in Alice Springs. Hostel staff are the first to admit that their rooms are bare-bones in style, but this is more than compensated for by the attractive pool area, an abundance of information on local activities, and proximity to the eating and drinking spots on Todd Mall, which is a single block away.
