Landmark sights in New South Wales

  1. A

    McElhone Stairs

These stone stairs were built in 1870 to connect spiffy Potts Point with the Woolloomooloo slums below. The steep steps run past an apartment block: residents sip tea on their balconies and stare bemusedly at the fitness freaks punishing themselves on the 113-stair uphill climb.

  2. B

    Harry’s Cafe de Wheels

Sure, it’s a humble pie cart, but Harry’s is a tourist attraction nonetheless. Open since 1938 (except for a few years when founder Harry ‘Tiger’ Edwards was on active service), Harry’s has been serving the good stuff to everyone from Pamela Anderson to Frank Sinatra and Colonel Sanders.

You can’t leave without trying a Tiger: a hot meat pie with sloppy peas, mashed potato, gravy and tomato sauce.

  3. C

    Oxley Scenic Lookout

Grab a bottle of wine and follow jacaranda-lined White St to the very top, where you'll reach this viewpoint. It is the best seat in the house as the sun goes down over Tamworth and the surrounding Liverpool Ranges.
