Indian restaurants in New South Wales

  1. A

    Aki's

The first cab off the rank as you walk onto Woolloomooloo's wharf is Aki's. And you need walk no further: this is beautifully presented, intuitively constructed high-Indian cuisine, supplemented by a six-page wine list showcasing local and international drops by the glass or bottle. The Kerala chilli beef is a simmering sensation.

  2. B

    Zaaffran

In a city with a gazillion cheap Indian joints, Zaaffran is a stand-out. Authentic and innovative curries by chef Vikrant Kapoor (of Singapore’s Raffles fame) are served up with awesome views across Darling Harbour’s sparkle and sheen. Book a balcony seat and launch yourself into the tiger prawn coconut curry. Good vegetarian selection, too.

  3. C

    Maya Tandoori

On a strip of mainly vegetarian Indian restaurants, Maya is proof that the best dinner companion ain’t always the prettiest. Bright lights, naff furniture, general lack of ambience…don’t be deterred! The food’s authentic, spicy and great value. Get preposterously coloured Indian sweets next door at Maya Sweets.

    Indian Tavern Tandoori

Locals who love a vindaloo support this multi-award eatery which also serves a range of dishes from the tandoori oven.

  5. Rajarani

Tikkas, tandooris, murghs, masalas and vindaloo; this place has won over the locals (and Sydneysiders) with its Bollywood authenticity.
