Tudor Hotel
Elegantly decorated with a romantic '80s record oozing from the restaurant. Garlic prawns and avocado taste good whether you are downstairs or up as it is the same menu on both levels.

B
Café Africa
Herbivores stay away, you will be confused by the Kalahari Bushman Skewers, and distraught by the Game of the Day. But carnivores are you ready for the Massal Challenge? Eat two Massai 1kg rumps and get the third one free.

White Bull
Armidale’s telltale blue-grey bricks are still in place but the White Bull hasn’t been shy giving the interior a makeover. This is a pub worthy of a bit of lippy, with couches for chilling, a bar with boutique beers and a bistro menu that rises above the usual pub grub.

Bottega Café & Delicatezza
A haunt not just for foodies, but for hungries too. This cafe has tables and shelves stocked with gourmet produce and a deli full of charcuterie and cheese. Breakfast doesn't get much better.

C
Red Grapevine Restaurant & Bar
It arrives hot, it's hearty, rich and filling. Chorizo, tomato and cannellini bean, it is the way soup was always meant to be. This restaurant is not trying to be anything other than a fantastic Italian dining experience. BYO bottled wine only.

Tamworth Hotel
Heritage colours and a 1930s design make this one of Tamworth's more aesthetically pleasing pubs. Choose from a formal dining area with white tablecloths and shiny glasses, or cook your own meat in the bistro/brasserie. There's a great rear courtyard the kids will love. There are basic pub rooms upstairs (s/d $40/50).

Sleepy Monkey
A rather plain exterior belies the fun interior of this excellent food and coffee option. The menu is a cut above, with wagyu burgers and Vietnamese prawn salads, or just sip on a wine while flicking through magazines and newspapers on a long communal table. Call ahead for occasional dinners.

Goldfish Bowl
This popular spot is in addition to the original and truly excellent Dangar St coffee haunt. It has indoor and outdoor tables and some menu surprises such as snails in mushrooms caps with Pernod and hazelnut butter.

Bistro on Cinders
Behind the post office, this plain brick building with a little courtyard houses a fantastic eatery. It's contemporary but not pretentious – have a quick coffee or sit around all night admiring the groovy chandeliers and artwork.
