Lonely Planet review for Scenic World
To the west of Katoomba is Scenic World. If you can stomach the megaplex vibe and blaring Raiders of the Lost Ark theme, ride the 1880s railway down the 52-degree incline to the Jamison Valley floor. Wander the 2.5km forest boardwalk or hike the track to the Ruined Castle rock formation (12km, six hours return), then catch the Cableway, an enclosed, wheelchair-accessible cable car, back up the slope. There’s also a cable car called the Scenic Skyway, which floats out across Katoomba Falls gorge. Its glass floor gives passengers views of the valley canopies 200m below.

how to avoid yet still experience....
muddy99 does not recommend this,
To spend the least amount of time possible in scenic world, while still getting an adrenalin shot:
Walk down Furber Steps - the track starts at the Kiosk opp the Caravan Park entrance around the corner from SW. Descend down thru rainforest, under cliffs, scaling ladders, getting close to water falls until you hit the National Pass track. Katoomba falls are 5 mins to the left. Check out the falls, then retrace your steps to the track junction, this time continue straight ahead to the bottom platform of the scenic railway. Catch the train back up (pay for a single trip at the top) then exit the gift shop as fast as you can.
