Lonely Planet review for Melbourne Cricket Ground
It's one of the world's great sporting venues, and for many Australians the 'G' is considered hallowed ground. In 1858 the first game of Aussie Rules football was played where the MCG and its car parks now stand, and in 1877 it was the venue for the first Test cricket match between Australia and England. The MCG was also the central stadium for the 1956 Melbourne Olympics and the 2006 Commonwealth Games. The William Barak Bridge links it to the CBD. MCG membership is a badge of honour for Melburnians of a particular class. It involves having two members propose and second your nomination and a wait of around 20 years.
If you want to make a pilgrimage, tours take you through the stands, corporate and coaches' areas, the Long Room and (subject to availability) the players change rooms and out onto the ground. They run (on non-match days) between 10am and 3pm. Bookings are not essential but recommended. The MCG houses the National Sports Museum. Pedestrians can head along Birrarung Marr
and take the musical trip along the William Barak bridge (listen out for the soundscape).

The great cauldron of Melbourne's sporting culture.
alexbarker1978 recommends this,
Australian Football has a formal history dating back to 1858, giving the game a history and tradition matched by few other sports. The majority of Melbourne-based clubs in the premier AFL competition were founded in the mid-late 1800s and thus traditional rivalry games at the 'G' provide the best opportunity to see the passion and pride Melbournians have in the code. If you cant go under the wing of a local, you're likely to find someone in the crowd enthusiastic to recruit you on the spot to explain the finer details in exchange for you 'barracking' for their team (just don't expect them to explain much during each quarter's play).
Good for: culture, sports fans, all - families with kids incl, local tradition, Feb-Sept; Fri-Sun

A Must-See
original21 recommends this,
Sports lovers from anywhere need to visit 'The G' and take in the grand spectacle of an AFL football match. Make sure you see Collingwood in action, they are the country's most popular team and always draw the biggest crowds!
Good for: Collingwood

A place for sporting dreams
steveomac recommends this,
Whether dreams are made or shattered, when it comes to sport in Melbourne the MCG is the place it happens. Don't be fooled by the name - while in summer "the G" is the place for Cricket - it is in the depths of winter that the G is at its best as it is also the home of Australian Rules Football
Good for: Families, family fun, sports fans, sport
Not good for: art, st kilda football club in 2010

Experience atmosphere like you've never experienced before
gmcinnes recommends this,
If you're in Melbourne during winter getting tickets to a football game is well worth your effort. Tip - try to pick two melbourne teams as the rivalry will make for a great spectacle. Also the sports museum is fantastic during weekdays.
Good for: family fun, sport, excitement, big events
Not good for: time consuming

Take a tour!
ride_on_postman recommends this,
Definitely worth going even on a non-game day to see the inner sanctum of the Long Room, the Library, Museum, the urinal with a window view of the ground. Even better find an MCC member, suit up, and get them to take you in on for a game.

A great place when you are with 99,999 other people
donuts99 recommends this,
Nothing beats attending an Aussie Rules grand final at the MCG with 99,999 other people. The atmosphere is electric.
When a sporting contest isnt in progress you can always visit the Australian Gallery of Sport to soak up a bit of history.
