Lonely Planet review for Abbotsford Convent
The convent, which dates back to 1861, is spread over nearly seven hectares of riverside land. The nuns are long gone – no-one is going to ask you if you’ve been to mass lately – and there’s now a rambling collection of creative studios and community offices. The Convent Bakery supplies impromptu picnic provisions, or the reimagined ‘wog bar’ Handsome Steve’s House of Refreshment will mix you up a Campari soda to sip on the balcony while you’re overlooking the ecclesiastic architecture and listening to the footy on the radio. There’s a Slow Food Market every fourth Saturday.

Down by the Yarra
ride_on_postman recommends this,
Situated by the Yarra the grounds are nice for a leisurely walk on a weekend afternoon. There are plenty of food outlets to keep you sustained. Lentil As Anything has an outlet here serving healthy vegetarian food (choose what you pay too). The bakery is excellent also.

One for a relaxing weekend
katmar33 recommends this,
This is a beautiful old convent building, restored to become a community hub. I recommend this place for the monthly 'makers' market, packed with arty crafty goodness.... and the slow food farmer's market, which frankly has some of the best tasting and best priced goodies in Melbourne.
Well maybe I exaggerated a bit on the price aspect, I usually leave this place with my wallet considerably lighter.

Try to go when there is an event on, the place has much more soul.
