Lonely Planet review
Featuring grassy knolls, river promenades and indigenous plants, Birrarung Marr is a welcome addition to the patchwork of parks and gardens around the city. And just to prove that all roads lead to a sporting dome, the William Barak Bridge connects the CBD to the MCG, and the promenade park runs along to the Melbourne and Olympic Park sporting precinct.
The modern sculptural Federation Bells that perch on the park's upper level ring out daily ( to , to and to ) with specially commissioned compositions. An old railway building in the park now hosts creative workshops for five- to 12-year-olds: ArtPlay (tel: 9664 7900; www.artplay.com.au) hosts activities including shadow plays, drumming and storytelling on weekends and during school holidays. Visiting children are welcome, but it's essential to book.
