Lonely Planet review for Italian Waiters Club
Down a laneway and up some stairs, once inside the Italian Waiters Club you’ll feel like you stepped into another era. Opened in 1947, it still bears ‘50s drapes, wood panelling and Laminex tables. Once only for Italian and Spanish waiters to unwind after work over a game of scopa (a card game) and a glass of wine, now everyone from suits to students is allowed in for hearty plates of red-sauce pasta and the regularly changing roster of specials.

Iconic Melbourne

Hearty italian on a budget doesn't get much better than this. Book a table, bring some wine and park yourself for a good feed with a group of friends. Good vego selection and enough variety to satisfy most. Service can be slow, but try and be patient.
This is iconic Melbourne - for those in the know.

Hearty Italian food just the way it should be
nikski recommends this,
When you want a break from the fancy restaurants this one provides a great dining experience. Up the stairs in a lane into a room that looks like it hasn't been changed since the early eighties. The meals are large and tasty. Wine is served in a tumbler. I have eaten the pasta and the steaks (served with a healthy home style veggies) and both are awesome. You walk away feeling full and the bill is always cheap.

Great Italian

You know it's good in Melbourne if you have trouble finding it. The Waiters Club is no exception. Once you have found it, pick a mismatched table close enough to one of the menus on the wall. Chose your feed and a bottle of Red and wait for the food to arrive.
It's one of those I am not sure how they make it taste so good experiences. The food looks no different to what you cook at home, but somehow, tastes a whole lot better. Reasonable prices and good service make the experience well worth the wander up and down Bourke Street until you find it!Good for: Romance, food, Budget Travellers, Groups, Solo Travellers, service, Families
