Lonely Planet review for Brunetti

Bustling from dawn to midnight, Brunetti is a mini-Roman empire. It’s famous for its coffee, granitas and authentic pasticceria (pastries). Bain-marie meals can be on the stodgy side (and sometimes that’s just what the locals want) but the toasted tremezzini always please.

    Let everyone eat cake!

    ladybirch recommends this,

If you are looking for a tasty treat in Melbourne forget Ackland St (St Kilda) and hit up Brunetti. Beautiful cakes, cookies, chocolates and coffee, the food is amazing.

It gets very busy here on weekends so get in early and avoid the crowds.

Tip: there is another Brunetti on Johnson St Fitzroy (not too far away) if you can't get a table but really want to try the cake.

    Great coffee, sweets and atmosphere

    adamm recommends this,

Located by Melbourne's famous Lygon street with renowned Italian street style cafe's Brunnetti is one of the finest. With wide frontage, many tables are outside the venue for those seeking to imerse themselves in the vibrant street atmosphere. There is also ample room inside this smart venue amoung wide selections of sweets and coffee queue. Service is good, food quality is superb and the coffee amoung the best in town.

    VIVA BRUNETTI!

    soull recommends this,

"Do you WANT me to die?!" My friend exclaimed, as I brought his steaming cup of thick Italian hot chocolate to the rickety outside table, and placed it ceremoniously before him.
"You said to get you a surprise!" I giggled, as I watched him gingerly scrape off the delicious layer of cream on top of the viscous brown liquid waiting underneath.
Before long, his frown was replaced by a smile - encased in a chocolate coloured gummy mouth. The Italian hot chocolate was a success! No watery milk with chocolate scrapings at Brunetti - instead you are treated to a vessel of pure chocolate heaven. The tiny almond biscuits that accompanied our drinks were soft in the middle, with a good melding of nuttiness and sweetness.
The atmosphere was bustling, people everywhere, inside and out, with motorbikes roaring past our table carrying skimpily clad women and muscled men. A ferrari cruised past soon after. Definitely a good cafe spot for people-watching of the not-so-everyday-variety! Solo cafe dwellers are kept happy with easy access to window seats, where it is possible to read, dabble on a laptop, or simply gaze at the world outside while munching on a huge array of cakes and biscuits of great variety.
A stroll past the towering cake-display inside, admiring the massive butter and sugar castles within, made our visit complete.
    VIVA BRUNETTI!

    broninmelb recommends this,

To put it simply, Brunetti has cakes and other sweet treats to die for! Located just off bustling Lygon Street in Carlton, known at Little Italy, this is the place to go for great coffee and something sweet to tantalise your tastebuds. A modern and spacious establishment with seating inside and out, it is very popular and a great spot for watching the world go by.

    Brunetti Cafe/restaurant

    chocolatier recommends this,

Brunetti Café shows heritage and exquisite art deco, whilst providing some of the best dishes, cakes and coffee’s. It is situated perfectly in central Carlton, where any businessmen and women can stop by for a coffee and a chat with other colleagues. They serve some of the best gelati in the most appealing flavors. They also have fine chocolatiers who do wonders with chocolate.

    A treat on Lygon Street

    badmonkeh recommends this,

Situated on Lygon St near many fine restaurants Brunetti's is the perfect end to the perfect evening.

There are a wide range of delicious cakes that should suit anyone's fancy. There also serve a variety of hot and cold drinks and i personally recommend their hot chocolate.

The only bad thing is that you may have to wait a little while to find a table especially with a group as the place is just that popular.

Regardless i encourage you to persist because it is really worth the wait.

    Enjoy!

    Tastes & smells of Italy!

    antmag recommends this,

We often indulge in the delicious 'paste piccoline' (small cakes) because you can enjoy a myriad of flavours & not feel too guilty! What a joy to have an afternoon with a favourite friend, sipping a great coffee with a delicious cake imagining you are in a piazza in the north of Italy - but without that price-tag!

    Definitely an experience!

    lindsayerickson recommends this,

If you are indecisive this is without doubt, not the place for you!! The cakes and biscuits are delicious. If you need to take some sweet treats to a friends place for tea, hit this place up. They have a lot of variety and it is easy to mix and match. The customer service is a treat as well. There are ladies and gentlemen lined up at your service. Overall the quality is wonderful but the the atmosphere is a bit to artificial. There isn't a whole lot of character or personalized service.
Its nice for a change but no chance of being your neighborhood cafe.

Brunetties = Great Coffee, Greater Cakes!

If you don't mind queing up for your order and the sound of souped up cars racing down Lygon St this may be the place for you.

Sophisticatedly neat, with a mix of coffee shop vs. starbucks.

Coffee and cake - what else do you need?

    hughelly recommends this,

Arguably on of the best coffees in Melbourne. Mix that with the vibrant atmosphere of Lygon street Carlton and you have a truly European experience.
But of course, one of the most important elements - the to die for cakes and biscuits and pastries. Have one with your coffee, take some home and come back the next day and the next.

Cakes and pastries to make your heart sing!

    suzywatusi recommends this,

Sure, it's always hard to see past the drooling hordes into the cake display cabinets, but it's SO worth the effort. The eclairs... the cheesecakes... those tube things filled with chocolate custard (what are they called? Canoli?)... I haven't been to Brunettis for ages, but just thinking about it has brought on a sugar craving.

The coffee is nice and strong, and usually comes with the added benefit of being prepared by beautiful Italian men...

A bit too production line but great baked goods

    rooosterboy recommends this,

Effiicency is the key, but the atmosphere suffers as you are forced to order at the counter, stand and wait for your order.

The cakes and pastries however are worth it, even if the atmosphere is a little clean and bright. Perhaps that is just me

    Stylish but easy

    katmar33 recommends this,

There is something I really enjoy about this place with its slick marbled bars and efficient coffee service to its endless glass cases filled with sugared confections. I swing from patronizing regularly - to seldom visiting in months. But its got a soft spot in my Melbourne heart. Try the Chicken crepe or the Lasagna if you're not Vegetarian..... or maybe any of the pastries. Bon Appetit!
