Lonely Planet review for Gill’s Diner
Tucked up the back of the Commercial Bakery, Gill’s postindustrial pastiche is an immediate charmer. Add old vinyl and freshly baked bread to the mix and it makes for an archetypal Melbourne moment. Lunch can be as simple as smoked salmon and prosecco; dinners are hearty, simple European fare – squid ink pasta, cotechino duck – done with effervescent flair. Details are attended to: the clafouti (custard) is individually baked to order and made with the most deliciously sour cherries.

For anyone who loves to go off the beaten track

A real gem and follows the perfect Melbourne ideal that all the good places are tucked into the laneways of laneways. Was with a friend who was skeptical about the area, honestly almost looks like there's nothing there until you see an old sign and BAM, you're in a completely new world than what it looked like on the outside.
The food and atmosphere (dimly lit and cosy) was excellent with the menu written up on a chalkboard, even my French friend who has high culinary taste really wanted to pass his compliments on the chef. -
Melbourne's little secret

Gill's Diner is tucked away in the sidestreets of Melbourne, and although appearing quite simple upon first impression, this little gem has some fantastic dishes which are extremely fresh, great value, and provides great service. The mix of European, French and Italian dishes on the menu certainly sets itself apart from surrounding restaurants. Would definately recommend!
