Lonely Planet review for Flower Drum
The Flower Drum continues to be Melbourne’s most celebrated Chinese restaurant. The finest, freshest produce prepared with absolute attention to detail keeps this Chinatown institution booked out for weeks in advance. The sumptuous but ostensibly simple Cantonese food is delivered with the slick service you’d expect in such elegant surrounds.

still astonishing

When chef Gilbert Lau departed the Drum, lots of folks were sure it would plummet. I'm really happy that nothing like that has happened. We got the set menu and were treated to the crispest, most evenly flavored Peking duck we've had (and we've had a lot - including in Beijing, Hong Kong and Singapore); fresh-off-the-boat scallops; an amazing beef with black bean sauce that turned out to be a rich steak dish; and a host of other goodies. Most impressive was the telepathic service: you didn't have to look around, as someone would anticipate your need (without being hovering or intrusive). It's a pretty penny, but worth it for the experience.
