Lonely Planet review for Hopetoun Tea Rooms

For five generations, ladies and 'nice' families have been nibbling pinwheel sandwiches here, taking tea (pinkies raised) and delicately polishing off a lamington. Hopetoun's venerable status, arcade location and pursed-lip air make afternoon or morning tea here refreshing indeed - the antithesis of Melbourne's constant coffee-taken-in-hip-laneways shtick.

We strolled through the amazing Block Arcade overwhelmed by the beauty of the architecture. This arcade has all of its features - well looked after. We then noticed an old world cafe. Hopetoun Tea Rooms - which was busy. We took some time trying to select the cakes - we were going to try - displayed in their front window. You cannot help but stop when you walk past the window. We were cheerfully greeted and seated on the next available table. We were seated just under the largest mirror I have ever seen. The decor - was also amazing. - many items from the bygone era - I also loved the old phone when it rang - it reminded me of when I was young. Cakes and coffee arrived. The coffee was fantastic - right temperature and the right texture - the cakes - nothing more than fantastic - will visit again
