The rickety cinema seating and fashionable gloom make Degraves a quintessential Melbourne laneway experience. If you've overindulged in that other Melbourne laneway experience, the hip little bar with no signage, beat your hangover with poached eggs or French toast with maple syrup from the all-day breakfast menu. Or just pull up a pew for an always-good coffee.

    Two stars for food. Five stars for coffee.

    As an Italian friend of mine once said, "If you're going to have the word 'espresso' in your name, you'd better make frickin' good espresso.'

    I must've had hundreds of glasses of coffee here in various forms, and only once scored a bad one. It was on the table for maybe two seconds before another staff member plucked it up with a quick apology and promised to be right back with a replacement.

    Everyone here knows their coffee and the place is a local institution in a laneway that's seen its fair share of cafes come and go. The food is ok for what it is - mostly panini, and the breakfast usuals, but it's not the place to go if you're hungry for a feed.

    It's a great to place sit and people watch as the business day closes and people spill out of the city and rush for their evening trains.
