Blue Chillies

There are only two things that make me jealous of Sydney. Firstly, they have street corners full of fragrant, spicy, coconutty Thai restaurants, the second is, um... well, they have great Thai restaurants. Just to prove we can do it too the curries have been flowing out of Blue Chillies for long enough for Fitzroyvians to make it a local. 

To the left is polished concrete floor to ceiling, boxed shelving which house ingredients that you’ll find in your dishes and to the right wall to wall benched seating and cosy couple tables. 

Entrees tend to be on the fried side and as with the mains the traditional dishes are hits. Curry Puffs are light and the crab rolls crisp. Roti breads for entrée or with a main are a must – flaky on the outside and warm and chewy on the inside. For mains noodles come out thick and with enough sauce to coat and slurp down. Yellow, green and red curries are creamy and spicy enough for your taste buds to remember the next day. On the specials board you might find Barramundi poached in a piquant broth of galangal, lime and sambal, balanced like only good Thai food can be. Coconut lovers will bask in the desert menu and what is a good Asian menu without a deep fried banana?

Service is welcoming and a smile is free with every meal. Anything Sydney can do, we can do better.  

How do you narrow down where to dine on Brunswick Street?  Well I'd put this place high on the HOT list.  It's got the big three - food, great staff and a relaxed atmosphere.  We over-ordered because there were so many yummy things to try and it turns out the servings are generous, but the waiter obliged (actually he suggested it) by giving us time to relax between courses.  Beef Rendang was deliciously tender, the calamari had a great spicy bite to it and I agree with Lonely Planet, that ikan billis is a must! Would be great for a quiet dinner for two, but equally lovely for a larger group.  Our meal for three cost approx. AU$70 per head, including a bottle of nice wine, and remember - we ordered much more than we needed to eat!
