Wading through the souvlaki wrappers and smashed beer bottles which decorate the Brunswick Street footpath early each morning, remnants from an atmospheric night before, Babka emerges as a shiny, clean, delicious smelling beacon of hope. 
Whether in need of a running-late-for-work takeaway croissant or a lazy Sunday lunch, Babka never fails to deliver. 
Almost always great coffee and consistently good soup are strong drawcards, but it's the bread that has secured Babka as the a favourite among Melbournians. Our rule: never order just one loaf, it will no doubt have dissapeared mere minutes after you get it home.

Looking around noticing that others are enjoying themselves and having a great time with smiles on their faces, I walk in and the sweet aroma triggered my nose and made my tummy suddenly wanting to be naughty and have one of those glories pastries. 

The queue was pretty long but it was so worth the wait. I ordered a pastry filled with butter and a coffee to complete my morning tea. I grabbed a table and patiently waited of my meal. The waitress came and gave me what I ordered with a big smile on her face. I began to eat the pastry and feast my eyes on it until I had finished. I drank the coffee which made me even more happier than I was before. It was a sunny beautiful morning just to make that day a little bit more special than it already was. Before I left I grabbed a bread roll for lunch. The best quality of bread and pastries had overwhelmed me. 

My morning there came to an end and the feeling of satisfaction continued throughout the day.

If you love proper sour-dough bread, and go gaga over flaky almond croissants, do yourself a favour and stop by Babka. Not only is this one the city's most atmospheric cafes, it also boasts possibly the best pies in town. A safe bet for vegetarians and carnivores alike, make sure you save space for the delectable rhubarb pastries, they're to die for.

Is there no greater smell in the morning than that of freshly baked bread and pastries... bleary eyed you wander in to this unassuming little shop, always overcrowded and bustling. Your senses are immediately brought to life with the sensational aromas of the overnight labour of fresh breads of every description, delectable pastries that are simply beyond description and some of the best breakfast to be found not only in Fitzroy but in all of Melbourne.  Fitzroy is an eclectic mix of all walks of life!  Those who used to frequent Acland Street St Kilda seemed to have migrated here following the sad commercialisation of St Kilda. This is Melbourne, in all it's glory, Sydney has the harbour, Melbourne has the culture and at it's heart is Fitzroy.  

Babka is simply delectable, from a cheap pastry, to a full breakfast with superb coffee, you simply haven't experienced Melbourne if you haven't ventured to Brunswick St, Fitzroy and you simply haven't experienced breakfast until you been to Babka!

Oh and do yourself a favour and buy some of their chutney...it's heaven and spice in a jar!

Omelette is big. Omelette is nice. Queue sucks. Go early.

I'm not a pie person generally, but Babka has turned me. Try the pumpkin one. Or the sweet pastries - the escargot is my favourite so far, but I haven't worked my way through them all yet - that's a work in progress. In fact everything I've had from here has been quite delicious - definitely worth the wait for a table.

The queues on the weekend are just awful so do yourself a favour and take away their amazing fresh bread (the vegie loaf is delish) pastries (mmm almond croissants) and excellent coffee. Also love their veggie pies (pumpkin or spinach and fetta).
