Why is it that journalists always open the best bars? Here the adventurous and considered wine list is well respected by connoisseurs, but still Deco manages to avoid any inkling of pretension. In the darkness you'll find locals ensconced in couches drinking red wines and eating delicious cheeses, while sports writers nurse Belgian beers and talk football at the bar.

On Friday and Saturday nights the cocktail crowds descend for the driest martinis this side of the Yarra.

    Great wine list, and low key charm

    This great little bar is a 20 minute tram ride out of the city, so potentially a bit out of the way if you are a short term tourist to Melbourne. But if you are north of the city, and want a quiet place to meet a friend whilst sipping a classy drink or two, this place is the ticket.

    They also have an astro-turf lined back courtyard that is delightful on summer nights.

    Good place to hang out while waiting for a table at another local favourite "The Moroccan Soup Bar" down the road.
