First Floor
Overlooking Green Sq is this fine-dining, minimalist décor establishment, where the seasonal Mod Oz menus run the gamut from fish and chips to stir-fries and pasta. The desserts are truly decadent and you can sip wines from around Australia.

Green Herring Restaurant
This place offers rustic cosiness in a 120-year-old slab hut. Don't be put off by the name – it serves Mod Oz with creative flourishes, exceptional desserts, and has a separate vegetarian menu. To get here, turn right off the Barton Hwy towards Gold Creek Village, then left at the roundabout.

Artespresso
This sun-filled bistro-style eatery has contemporary art on the walls, but the paintings get scant attention from diners elbow-deep in decadent eggy breakfasts or supping on delicious dinners.

Aubergine
Another fine-dining favourite, with fine ingredients artfully presented amid a refined atmosphere. It's worth saving room for the decadent desserts.

Urban Pantry
This popular brunch spot boasts a chic bistro atmosphere inside and sunny tables in the small square outside. It serves excellent lunches and dinners, with dishes ranging from hearty soups to gourmet main courses. Its cakes are delicious, and on Friday nights during summer there's free jazz outside.

Milk & Honey
There are lots of long-standing cafes on this alley but this newcomer has the most interesting food. Try the breakfast trifle or, for something more substantial, the gypsy breakfast with eggs, chorizo and beans.

Ginger Room
The members of parliament could only have dreamt of being so well fed when this place was the humble parly dining room. These days white-linen service, sophisticated cuisine and a superb wine list make this one of Canberra's top restaurants. To enjoy the elegant surrounds of Old Parliament House on the cheap, try Ginger's little sister, Café in the House (open for lunch and snacks daily), or in the summer, head to the courtyard lawn for some cocktails and tunes.
