In 2009, the travel world was rocked by swine flu and ’staycations’, but what about 2010? In an extract from Lonely Planet Magazine’s January 2010 edition, Tim Moore takes a look at possible trends.

Swimming with dolphins falls out of favour as suspicions grow that the highly developed cetaceans have learnt to patronise their aquatic human companions, with many disgruntled swimmers reporting sarcastic flipper applause and squeak-based mimicry. The new trend is to spend your holiday wet-time with marine species who know their place, either because they’re ugly and thus grateful for the attention (wading with lampreys), or in fear of their lives (standing on crabs).

So what else might be on the cards for 2010? Well, reverse-slum tours for starters. Oh, and anti-spas.
