Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Days 1-3 Beijing

The fascinating city of Beijing is the ideal place to start this journey. Uncover the secrets of the Forbidden City, walk through Tiananmen Square and enjoy a day at the amazing Great Wall of China, which stretches far over China and is one of mankind's most astonishing architectural achievements.

Days 4-7 Ulaanbaatar/Ger Camp

Cross the border into Mongolia and journey into the grasslands of Genghis Khan. Stay in a traditional ger, walk through alpine parks, cook Mongolian dumplings and visit a community project that supports disadvantaged children.

Day 8 Trans-Mongolian Railway/Ulan Ude

Take a train ride north through the vast steppe of Mongolia, taking in views of a changing landscape and heading towards Siberia, the heart of Russia.

Days 9-11 Lake Baikal

Enjoy feasting on local food while on an overnight homestay and participate in traditional customs on the shores of sparkling Lake Baikal.

Days 12-13 Trans-Siberian Railway

The route of the famed Trans-Siberian Railway covers vast terrain, crossing the taiga and travelling through five time zones on its way from Asia to Europe. Watch the world go by and relax on this famous locomotive.

Days 14-15 Kungur

Break up the journey with a stop in tranquil Kungur, home to an onion-domed skyline and an abundance of beautiful natural landscapes. See one of the world's biggest ice caves which is permanently frozen all year round.

Days 16-18 Moscow

Wander the streets of Moscow, Russia's capital, and take in the famous Red Square, St Basil's Cathedral and the magnificent Kremlin. Visit the Armoury Museum and Lenin's Mausoleum for a dose of history.

Days 19-21 St Petersburg

The elegant city of St Petersburg, full of must-see monuments and complete with a lively night scene, is the final breathtaking destination on this epic cross-continental journey.
