Beach sights in Asia

  1. Qīngdǎo Beaches

Qīngdǎo is famed for its six beaches, which are pleasant enough, but don't go expecting the French Riviera. Chinese beach culture is low-key, although the main swimming season (June to September) sees hordes of sun-seekers fighting for towel space. Shark nets, lifeguards, lifeboat patrols and medical stations are at hand. If you give in to the many touts in the area, you can take a boat ride around the bay for Y10 to Y20 depending on the size of the boat.

Qīngdǎo's largest beach is draped along the shore, way off in the east of town. Shílǎorén Bathing Beach (石老人; Donghai Donglu) is a 2.5km-long strip of clean sand and seawater-smoothed seashells, occasionally engulf…

  2. Beaches

The long sandy strip off the city centre at Sānyà Bay (三亚湾; Sānyà Wān) is the most relaxed of the three main beaches, and the one place you will really see people kicking back, laughing, playing and having a beachy old time. There's a long pathway for strolling in the cool evenings, and if the tide is out a little you can walk on the sand for many kilometres.

Dàdōnghǎi Bay (大东海湾; Dàdōnghǎi Wān) sports a wider beach than Sānyà and has a shaded boardwalk running along most of its length. The setting, in a deep blue bay with rocky headlands, is simply gorgeous but it does get busy here and people really seem to be trying too hard to enjoy themselves.…

  3. Beaches

Pǔtuóshān's two large beaches, One Hundred Step Beach (百步沙; Bǎibùshā) and One Thousand Step Beach (千步沙; Qiānbùshā) on the east of the island are attractive and largely unspoilt, although periodically you may have to pay for access (admission Y15); swimming (May through August) is not permitted after 6pm.

  4. Beaches

Of Yāntái's two beaches, No 1 Beach (Dìyī Hǎishuǐ Yùchǎng), a long stretch of soft sand along a calm bay area, is superior to No 2 Beach (Dì'èr Hǎishuǐ Yùchǎng), which is less crowded, but more polluted. Both beaches can be reached by bus 17.

  5. Ao Hin Khok & Ao Phai

More subdued than their northern neighbour, Ao Hin Khok and Ao Phai are two gorgeous bays separated by rocky headlands. The crowd here tends to be younger and more stylish than the down-to-earth crew in Hat Sai Kaew and the parties are late-nighters. These two beaches are the traditional backpacker party centres of the island.
