  1. A

    Marunouchi Building

Out the Marunouchi exit of Tokyo Station, ‘Marubiru’ overflows with over 75 options for all budgets and tastes, including soaring, pricey Italian, kaiseki and Chinese on the 35th and 36th floors, Hawaiian hamburgers to Fukuoka rāmen on the 5th and 6th, and casual and takeaway in the basement.

  2. B

    Whole Earth Restaurant

This confectionery-coloured teak house wears a garden of hanging vines, kòi ponds and orchids growing in the crooks of tree limbs. It is the sort of place Thais go to treat someone special – where the staff will treat you like royalty and the dishes seem exotic (Thai Indian and vegetarian) without being demanding.

  3. Ya Wang Restaurant

Ya wang is Mandarin for ‘duck king’, which gives you a fair idea of what this little restaurant a few blocks from the Causeway border crossing specialises in. Savoury, juicy, delicious and half the price of what you’ll pay in Singapore.

  4. Mondee

During the day, this cosy wooden shack serves khànǒm jeen (fresh rice noodles served with a variety of curries). At night Mondee takes full advantage of the breezes and river view and serves decent central Thai fare with an emphasis on seafood.

  5. C

    Suburbia

Cool, modern wine bar and restaurant set in a lush garden setting. It doesn't have the sea views of its Sentosa competitors, and the building looks a bit like a university science block, but at night it's a perfect spot to sit outside and down a bottle or two.

  6. D

    Takumi-an

This bustling lunch eatery beside the Tamozawa Imperial Villa serves hearty soba (buckwheat noodles) dishes, noodle and tempura set meals, as well as kamo namban (soba topped with duck and leeks; ¥1050).

  7. Caretta

Staying in Shiodome? This office building has restaurants upstairs (46th and 47th floors) and down (basement levels), including branches of Din Tai Fung and Toraji.

  8. E

    Nayok Fa

This ma-and-pa place cooks up fresh food in the massive woks out front. Try pàt see·éw (stir-fried wide noodles with a choice of beef, pork or chicken) or the suckling pig and rice.

  9. F

    Meet Point Restaurant

Smartly suited waiters bring forth spot-on Bengali dishes at this heaving restaurant. The sign is in Bengali only but it’s very easy to find as it’s right on the main circle.

    Sunday Jazzy Brunch

If you require more than just victuals, then consider the Sheraton’s Sunday brunch, which unites all the hotel’s restaurant outlets to a theme of live jazz.

  12. Shin-Marunouchi Building

North of Marubiru, the 5th through 7th floors of (you guessed it) ‘Shin-Marubiru’ are gorgeously decked out like a ramble through old Edo.

  13. Shaphired Restaurant

Directly opposite the Parjatan Motel. It doesn’t have a menu, but does have a nice attitude.

    Phuoc Thanh

The best com ga (chicken with rice) restaurant on Ð Tran Quang Dieu.

  15. Talo Restaurant

Decorated with yak skulls, prayer flags and tangka, this friendly upstairs Tibetan restaurant has a great menu embracing pancakes (Y12), apple rings (Y20), a host of Tibetan dishes and other heart-warming food. Overlooking the main street, it's a great place for a beer. There's a smarter restaurant attached for more variety.

Several backpacker cafes offer similar menus, with big burgers, tasty pies and hot coffee; these include Lesha's Restaurant – on the main street – and Ali's Restaurant, just before the bridge on the way to Sertri Gompa. At the time of research, Lángmùsì Tibetan Horse Trekking was planning to open an internet-equipped restaurant-cafe across the road…

  16. I

    Rum Jungle

The best restaurant in the area and one of the best in all of Phuket is family run and spearheaded by a terrific Aussie chef. The New Zealand lamb shank is divine, as are the steamed clams, and the pasta sauces are all made from scratch. Everything – including the Pampero rocks – is served under a thatched roof to an exceptional world-beat soundtrack.

  17. Pinocchio

This beautiful candle-lit garden restaurant features a huge stone pizza oven, imported wine and cheese, tremendous sourdough bread, even better pizza, homemade pasta, and gelato.

  18. Phu Khao Lak

With its cloth tables spilling to the edges of a lawn at the southern end of the Khao Lak strip, this place is hard to miss. And you shouldn't because there's a huge menu of Western and Thai dishes here with ample descriptions, all cooked to perfection.

  19. Nong Bank Restaurant

This place serves point-and-grill seafood and a superb yellow curry with crab (120B), with a half-dozen tables scattered beneath a tree on the white sand.

  20. Miáozú Fēngwèi Guǎn

At this amiable village place you can perch on an old Miao wooden stool, fill up on very tasty local dishes and sample the village firewater.

  21. Mama's Restaurant

Nobody, and we do mean nobody, does seafood better than Mama, who's set up across from Boat 813. Her fish cakes are insane, so is the barracuda sautéed in yellow curry.

  23. John's Information Café

This place has a quiet location in the backyard of the Tǔlǔfān Bīnguǎn. Western and Chinese meals are offered, but there is a fair amount of crossover – the pasta we ordered was filled with Chinese spices, peppers and chillies. The ice-cream sundae was a treat in Tupan's blistering heat. The name is somewhat misleading as there is little in the way of traveller information.

    Bì Fēng Táng

A northern outpost of the popular Shànghǎi restaurant empire. Come here for delicate, southern-style dumplings, as well as rice noodles, clay pot dishes and excellent desserts. It's good for late-night munchies. Note that the restaurant address is the same as the Jin Gu Hotel, but it's around to the side across from Cafe Russia 1914.

  25. Altun Orda

A sumptuously designed restaurant, famous for its roasted mutton (Y55). Other tasty dishes include ghoush nan (meat pie) and mirizlig manta (pastry with raisins and walnuts).
