K-Too Beer & Steakhouse
Run by the same people who run Kilroy’s, the decor and furnishings here are deliberately rough-and-ready pub style, and the food and atmosphere are excellent. Dishes range from Irish stew to spinach and potato salad with honey mustard dressing, and the excellent pepper steak (Rs 420) followed by fried apple momos is already a post-trekking classic. Live European football is broadcast on the TV. For a quieter vibe head for the garden.

Kilroy’s
Named after the Irish founder and chef, this place is a definite cut above the average Thamel restaurant. The menu ranges from Balti chicken (Rs 345) to Irish stew (Rs 355) and interesting hybrids such as seafood thukpa with lemongrass (Rs 400), plus great desserts, especially the bread-and-butter pudding (Rs 195). The menu is posted online. You can sit inside, or outside in the shady garden, complete with waterfall.

Ikh Mongol
The flagship restaurant for APU, one of Mongolia's largest food and alcohol producers, Ikh Mongol doles out huge platters of grilled meat and jugs of beer. Needless to say, it's not a great place for calorie-watchers. There is daily live music (22:00) and a large beer patio built on two levels. It's on the east side of the State Circus.

Strings
One of the most popular places in town, thanks largely to the in-house rock band from the Philippines. Moneyed expatriates from the US favour the place - the Hard Rock Café atmosphere provides a taste of home. For a filling meal try the fajitas, the Hawaiian pork stir-fry or a teriyaki chicken sandwich.

Hibiki
- Tokyo, Japan
- Restaurants › Pub
The inventive menu at this Japanese pub-style restaurant emphasises quality meats and hearty side dishes, all of which perfectly accompany the extensive selection of booze. However, don’t let all this fine food and drink distract you from the incredible views of the Rainbow Bridge across Tokyo Bay.

Nature Pub
Chinggis Khaan would feel quite at home downing pints in this rustic restaurant and pub. The red exterior leads into a dimly lit hall decorated with stretched goat skins, wolf traps, and compound bows. The kitchen is probably the best in town, offering up a variety of dishes from pork steaks to fish.

Grand Khaan Irish Pub
Big crowds, lots of smoke, free-flowing beer and loud music set the scene for Ulaanbaatar's most popular night spot. The pub-grub menu includes an array of salads. An attached café (open 08:00 to 22:00) serves espressos, cappuccinos and croissants, plus English and German breakfasts.

Hakodate Beer
Next to the Hakodate Kokusai Hotel (函館国際ホテル), this expansive brick building has live music and boisterous crowds. Scan the English menu, and choose from a variety of microbrews – from cold ales and golden wheat beers to dark stouts – to complement homemade pizzas and various items from the grill including fresh-caught squid and locally made sausages.

Flying Elephant
Eclectic and fun, the Flying Elephant is what a restaurant might look like if a bunch of uni students turned their living room into a diner. The lounges are comfortable, the staff are energetic and free beer comes with every delicious pizza or burger ordered.

Kios Semarang
The closest thing to a Makassar institution, keep on climbing the stairs to the 3rd floor where you will be rewarded with a rowdy crowd, good seafood and cheap beer. Start with a sunset and a Bintang or two before trying the fresh squid or shrimp.

Harry's Pub
Harry's is at its best in the high season, when it is one of the area's most popular watering holes. Whenever the doors are open though, you can count on big portions of anything that comes with fries. The beer's good, if a little expensive.

Art Café
Progressive café and bar on the main road with very orange interior, couches and modern art on the walls. A big-screen TV is tuned to local news. Food is standard Mongolian meat and potato dishes and few Russian soups and salads.

Cow Pub
The name itself warrants a poke-around in this place whose design scheme is dedicated to cowpokes, Tibetan or otherwise, or at least a life in Old Tibet. Subdued but welcoming, you'll find it in the old town.

Old Rock
A block south of the river and across the street from Nakamachi, this popular gaijin pub attracts a lively crowd on weekend nights. Good lunch specials and a wide selection of beers are available.

Harry's Steakhouse & Pub
No surprises at Harry's: it's the usual, air-conditioned tourist boozer. If you fancy a slab of steak in fresh, clean surrounds, however, you could do a lot worse than a table here.

Phinisi Restaurant
Shiver me timbers, this is set aboard a full-size schooner. It's kitsch, but so is the menu, with international favourites such as 'Chicken Gordon Blue'.

Fubar
Grab a beer here and relax on the roof garden in the evening (well, Xīnjiāng time) after a long, sweaty day. Like its flagship in Ürümqi, this watering hole serves imported alcohol and authentic Western food.

Brau Haus
Brau Haus 'Two slices of crusty pork roast' and 'one whole pork knuckle' may not sound like the most appetizing menu items, but rest assured this brew pub can serve up some tasty dishes to go with tall glasses of beer. The bar has an attractive, airy layout, made more interesting with some B&W photos of old Ulaanbaatar. Live music on Friday.

Ocean Pub
A favoured haunt of many of the town's expat residents, Ocean Pub is a good place to chow down on steaks, Indonesian dishes and some hearty breakfasts while making new friends. The beer also comes ice cold, and there's a pool table.
