  1. A

    Cream Centre

An excellent ice-cream parlour in a bright, slick interior. Oh, and real food, too: a pure-veg hodgepodge of Indian, Mexican and Middle Eastern.

  2. Chopper's Bar & Grill

So popular that it's become a local landmark, Chopper's is a two-storey hang-out where divers and travellers can widen their beer belly. There's live music, sports on the big-screen TVs, billiards and a cinema room. Friday nights are particularly popular; the drinks are 'two for one', and dishes are half-priced as well. Cheers for scored goals are interspersed with exaggerated chatter about creatures seen on the day's dive.

  3. B

    May & Mark

One of the first places in town to start serving Western food way back when, May & Mark still does it best thanks to recipes collected from helpful faràng (foreigners of European descent) over the years. Specialities range from excellent fresh bread to bangers and mash and cordon bleu meals.

  4. C

    Junk

The coolest car-boot sale you’ll ever see, Junk is filled to the brim with…well…junk. But it’s all so very chic – when you walk in you’ll think, ‘Did Amelie explode in here?’ A favourite among Malaysian celebs, Bla Bla Bla’s sister restaurant offers superb sophisticated Western food with an Italian bias. A word to the wise: don’t set your watch by any of the wall clocks…

  5. D

    Broth

In a leafy oasis atop sleepy Duxton Hill, past a row of sleazy KTV bars, this welcoming bistro has friendly staff, bentwood chairs, ceiling fans and a wall of wine and cookbooks. The menu is typically modern with dishes such as lamb loin, steaks and risottos.

  6. E

    Cafe Orange Boom

Just past Cafe Diogo, on the opposite side of the road, this nice little place has good food and friendly service, with a useful noticeboard for catching up on Anjunan goings-on.

  7. F

    Blue Pumpkin

Downstairs it could be just another café, albeit with a delightful selection of cakes, breads, pastries and homemade ice cream. But head upstairs to find an old-school Starck (Philippe that is) interior, another world of white minimalist expression, with day beds that drain you of all will to leave. Light bites, filling specials, ice-cream creations and divine shakes – what more can you ask for? OK, there’s also free wi-fi.

  8. G

    Eat Me Restaurant

A little bit of Sydney has blossomed here off Th Silom, helping to give Bangkok more cosmo cred. Chic, minimalist decor is accessorised by rotating art exhibits supplied by H Gallery, the city’s leading contemporary gallery. And lest we forget, the food is creative and modern, spanning the globe from pumpkin risotto to tuna tartare.

  9. Papa's Tapas

Another member of Ko Tao's new designer diner army, this swish set-up takes a stab at nouveau cuisine with sample-sized platters. Those with a big wallet (and a little foresight) can order the Chef's Special - a menu of unique dishes that requires 24 hours to procure and prepare. Reservation recommended.

  10. Fame Restaurant

A farang (foreigner) depot, Fame does a little bit of everything; cooks up Western breakfasts and Thai stir-fries, books ferry tickets and rents out day-use showers. It's open from before the crack of dawn until late at night.

  12. Murni's Warung

Since 1977, Murni's has been an Ubud favourite. The riverside setting is beautiful and a four-level dining room and bar overlooks the lush valley. The menu has good versions of Indo and Western classics. You may find the sizable gift shop not unlike fly paper.

  13. H

    Equinox

Adjectives struggle to describe the jaw-dropping views from this 70th-floor restaurant. Soaring ceilings, Asiatic wall hangings and plush fabrics are mere backdrops. The view rates a 10, the food a little less. Book early for a window seat.

  14. I

    Delicious

Stylish delicious cafes are popping up all over KL; this is one of the biggest branches, serving its trademark chunky sandwiches, big salads, pastas, scrumptious cakes and other desserts. The afternoon tea set (RM69 for two) is a good deal.

  15. J

    Lazy Mekong Daze

A Western spot on the riverfront, this is - as the name suggests - a relaxing place to while away some time. The menu includes Khmer and Thai classics, plus a selection of home-comfort food. Plus beer - it's run by a Brit after all.

  16. K

    Rainbow Restaurant

Set on a small rooftop with a view over the lake, the Rainbow hums with satisfied customers. The pasta is excellent, and the ice-cream sundaes overflow with sugary goodness. The hummus with fresh pita is pretty darn authentic.

  17. L

    Randy's Café Bar & Restaurant

Randy's hypes its Canadian theme although the 'Canadian' items on the menu, such as chilli con carne over mashed potatoes, will dishearten Cannuck gourmets. There's good people-watching over breakfasts at this corner spot.

  18. M

    Bruno's

The walk-in wine cellar makes Bruno's the go-to place for those seeking vino with their victuals. Lunchtime is a bargain - the team of gourmet chefs prepares scrumptious steaks and seafood courses for a good price.

  19. La Piazza

If you're in the mood for some swankier international fare, come here for quality wood-fired pizzas, exquisite potato gnocchi, succulent Australian lamb chops and authentic handmade pasta.

  20. N

    De Boliva Kitchen & Lounge

A popular, if pricey, Western-style cafe with filling sandwiches (try the wholewheat BLT). Its desserts are famous, with crepes, sorbets and ice cream galore (including low-fat options).

  21. O

    Modernark Pharm

This interesting little restaurant serves tasty sets of Japanese and Western dishes, including burritos and rice dishes. There are some veggie choices here. Look for the plants.

    Lamayuru Restaurant

Surrounded by other similar backpacker eateries, this is a plain but very reliable place for good inexpensive Indian, Chinese and international snacks.

  24. Baywatch Bar

Sorry fellas, Pam Anderson is nowhere to be found, although the delicious cocktails and international dishes are a decent consolation prize.

  25. Q

    Wisma Merdeka Food Court

Not as large as the one in Centre Point mall, this simple food court is still a good option for a cheap meal up at the northern end of town.

  26. R

    King's Cliff Restaurant

An atmospheric restaurant with quality multicuisine food. There's no alcohol permit, but you can BYO.
