  2. B

    Vedas

Shànghǎi’s best Indian restaurant presents classic northern Indian cuisine, with a smattering of vegetarian dishes from south India, in a soothing atmosphere. You can sample one of the decent cocktails (from Y45) in the separate bar area before heading into the main dining room for your rogan josh or korma. As with all Indian restaurants on the mainland, it would be nice if the curries had a bit more bite, but the flavours are spot on.

  3. C

    Bhojohari Manna (Ekdalia)

Serving sublime Bengali food, it was this tiny restaurant-cum-takeaway that launched the now-growing chain. Pick items ticked on the daily-changing white-board. There’s no better place to splurge on coconut- tempered chingri malaikari, featuring prawns so big they speak lobster. Sketches on the walls are by the father of celebrated film-director Satyajit Ray.

  4. D

    Ambrai

The Indian cuisine at this scenic restaurant – at lake-shore level, looking across to Lake Palace Hotel, Lal Ghat and the City Palace – does justice to its fabulous position. Ambrai feels like a French park, with its wrought-iron furniture, dusty ground and large shady trees, and there’s a terrific bar to complement the dining.

  5. Not Just Parathas

Yes, this cheery place offers not just parathas, but with 120 types, you have gotta go for the speciality, be they Tawa-fried, roasted tandoori, or low-calorie (wholemeal, olive-oil smothered). Stuffings include palak (spinach), chicken tikka and aloo gobi (potato and cauliflower), to name a few.

  6. E

    Hotel RRR

Classic Andhra-style food is belted out at this ever-busy eatery, and you might have to queue for a table if you walk in during lunch. One item to try is the piping-hot veg thali (Rs43) served on banana leaves. Some meaty options are available, too. There’s a second branch on Sri Harsha Rd.

  7. F

    Khyber

Drink beer at the cowboy-themed basement bar, before diving into flavoursome northwest Frontier-style cuisine at the restaurant. They do startlingly good dhal Khyber (slow-simmered curried lentils) and pathar kebab (lava stone–roasted lamb).

  8. G

    Khana Sutra

The curries here, which are claimed to have aphrodisiac properties, are authentically Indian and are served among the decorative charms of an authentic Delhi diner. If the owner's around, be prepared for opinionated discussions about British football.

  9. H

    Ganga Fuji Restaurant

Free live Indian classical music is played every evening at 7.30pm, which makes this otherwise ordinary multicuisine restaurant worth considering for dinner. Not to be confused with the nearby hotel, Ganga Fuji Home, which also has a restaurant.

  10. I

    Punjabi Restaurant

An authentic, Punjabi-run place churning out tasty vegetarian curries and tandoori breads. The front section has an inviting atmosphere with wicker lanterns and candles. The paneer curries and masala dosas are sensational.

    Kalavara Family Restaurant

A bustling favourite of Trivandrum’s middle class, this place does commendable lunchtime biryanis (Rs40 to Rs80) and a range of Keralan fish dishes. Our money’s on the fish molee (fish pieces in coconut sauce, Rs90).

  13. K

    Mughal Darbar

Mughal-style wall murals contrast with Alpine-scene windows in this reliable restaurant above a popular bakery. Dishes range from inexpensive veggie curries (Rs35 to Rs50) to indulgent Kashmiri specialities (Rs120 to Rs240).

    Dolphin Restaurant

Perched high above Man Mandir Ghat, this rooftop restaurant at Rashmi Guest House is a fine place for breakfast or an evening meal. Watch food being prepared through the glass-walled kitchen or sit out on the breezy balcony.

Lip-smacking Indian-style curries are a family affair at this blindingly bright restaurant in Little India (Kampung Keling). It also serves cold Bintang. Malay-Indian roti shops are located nearby.

Moderately priced Indian place, with a lunch buffet and halal food.

  19. Q

    Nazim Indian Food

This vacuous Indian diner has a huge menu of north and south Indian food. The curries come as spicy as you like and the vegetarian selection is extensive. The Indian deities and faux tandoori chickens adorning the walls are more appealing after several bottles of Kingfisher.

It’s not just the name that’s sexy here, as this stylish Indian restaurant serves sensual flavours that hit the spot every time. All the heavyweights are here, including tikka masala, daal and creamy curry, and there are regional specialities from north and south.

The rooftop restaurant at Aristo continues to be a great choice and is usually crowded in the evenings. Dishes include walnut chicken with brown rice (delicious but generally made with cashews!) and grilled prawns.

    Kebab Corner

Specialising in tandoori dishes, this has some great veg and nonveg sizzling dishes. The location is a surprisingly peaceful tent by a busy junction. The personable chef has been getting it right for some time now.
