Hunan restaurants in Asia

  1. Folk Jar Restaurant

You'll expect prices to be much higher when you see the classy grey brick interior of this excellent Hunan restaurant. But the fiery dishes are quite reasonably priced and there's even a picture menu to help you choose. The restaurant is just west of Yu Sha Lu on busy Jinlong Lu, a hub of sorts for ethnic restaurants in Hǎikǒu.

    The Chinese

Popular with Chinese diplomats, here the Hunan chef serves up authentic cuisine, such as Hunan smoked lamb or gong boa ji ding (chicken with onion, chilli, peanut and hot garlic sauce) in a wow-factor tentlike interior, decorated with calligraphy.

    Xīnhuá Lóu

This long-time favourite is a can't-miss option for local dishes; harried middle-aged ladies wheel around trolleys of cold and hot dishes for patrons to pick and choose. It also does great noodles (from Y7). Another branch is across the way at 108 Wuyi Dadao.

  4. Huǒgōngdiàn

There's a great buzz at this landmark Chángshā restaurant – Mao was a fan of its stinky dòufu (tofu). A huge selection of steaming dim sum–style dishes are wheeled around by ladies who like to tempt foreigners into trying such delights as chicken feet. Make sure to order the excellent máoshì hóngshāoròu (毛氏红烧肉; Mao-style braised pork; Y48) off the menu. There's a less atmospheric branch near the train station at 93 Wuyi Dadao (call (8412 0580).

    Shaoshanchong Xiang Restaurant

For sheer OTT novelty and dubious tastefulness, check out this nostalgic Húnán restaurant where signature chili-infused dishes from the home province of Chairman Mao are delivered by gaggles of cheeky, pig-tailed girls in Red Guard uniforms.

    Yuelu Shanwu

This two-storey place has a marvellous view over Houhai, while the catalogue-sized English picture menu is heavy on the searing, spicy flavours of Hunan province. But not every dish will take the lining off your mouth; try the home-style pork or the boiled frog.

  8. Máogōng Xiāngcàiguǎn

A statue of the Chairman overlooks diners at this slick place across the road from the Little Goose Pagoda. The menu features Húnán classics, such as spicy chicken and boiled frog (Y38), most of which have a fiery kick that Mao, who liked his food hot, would have approved of.

    Dishuidong

Named after a cave at Mao Zedong's birthplace, this Hunan eatery's low-key rustic charms are matched by an invigorating menu. Xiāngcài (Hunan cuisine) is all about searing spice, but don't reach for the dry ice yet, dishes are quite tame. The spicy bean curd (麻辣豆腐; around Y18) hits the mark; flesh out the meal with the Stewed Pork in Sauce of Chairman Mao's Style (毛公红烧肉; Y28).
