Take care when sinking your teeth into the signature beef pastry ($20 for two) because they’ll squirt. Less spectacular though still good are the lamb dishes and dumplings. It’s not the cleanest place, but fans don’t seem to mind.

Although atmosphere is a bit lacking, New Market is a great place for cheap breakfast or lunch. Raw food at ground level includes the only unadulterated ground coffee in town. Upstairs find strictly halal food stalls, with a mix of Chinese and Malay up another level. Try the on-site Imperial Seafood Restaurant (halal).

Muslim Restaurant of Tian Shan
Serves the dishes of the Silk Road, meaning lots of lamb - braised lamb, stewed lamb and lamb wrapped in buns - eaten with a side of black vinegar and garlic. Try the lǎng (50 jiao), crispy onion pancakes baked to perfection on the side of circular ovens.

This simple halal Indian cafe facing the padang offers superb value. The menu, which includes lots of vegetarian dishes, is displayed on the wall, with roti and dosa starting from as little as RM1.
