Vegetarian Lifestyle
These folks are surely improving their karma by making organic, vegetarian fare fashionable for the masses. There’s a wide range of clever dishes, including soup served in a pumpkin, but best are the sweet Wuxi spareribs (Y36), stuffed with lotus root of course, and the diverse clay pots (from Y26). No MSG is used and cooks go light on the oil.

Chi Lin Vegetarian
The location behind a waterfall and tasty vegetarian food, including steamed rice with mixed mushrooms, make dining here a superb way to begin or end your visit to Chi Lin Nunnery and Nan Lian Garden. The elegant Song Cha Xie (Pavilion of Pine and Tea) nearby specialises in the art of Chinese tea drinking.

Pure Lotus Vegetarian
A very smart, monk-run establishment, where the chefs do wonders with a mix of soybeans, tofu and vegetables. The dishes have wonderful names like ‘The ordinary one with virtue holds lightning’. It’s located in a forecourt just off Nongzhanguan Nanlu.

Baihe Vegetarian Restaurant
All Beijing’s vegetarian restaurants present dishes masquerading as meat. Here, though, the selection – lamb kebabs and Peking duck – is more imaginative than usual, and extremely tasty. Service is courteous and the atmosphere relaxed. English menu.

Considered the best restaurant in town for Padang food, essentially a large buffet of rice that you scoop selected meats and vegetables onto – think fried fish, fried chicken, veg cooked in chilli paste and the like.
