  1. Café Corner

Prime real estate, mod furnishings, and tasty iced coffees have made Café Corner a Sairee staple over the last few years. Swing by at 5pm to stock up for tomorrow morning's breakfast; the scrumptious baked breads are buy-one-get-one-free before being tossed at sunset.

    Mellow Café

Located down a narrow alley (look for the palm tree) not far from Kintetsu Nara Station, this open-plan cafe is a pleasant spot to fuel up for a day of sightseeing. The menu centres on pasta and pizza (there's a brick oven). There's an English sign and menu.

  3. B

    John's Cafe

In the courtyard of Sèmǎn Bīnguǎn, this is a popular hang-out, offering both Western (pricey) and Chinese (cheaper) dishes. There's another branch in the Chini Bagh Hotel.

  4. Ming Yuan

If the constant bustle of Yángshuò gets too much, creep into this small cafe. The downstairs tables are a bit cramped, but it's still a quiet slice of civilisation and the cream of the crop for coffee, with a rich range of blends including some more obscure offerings. It recently opened a bigger, elegantly decoratedbranch adjacent to River View Hotel.

    Café Independants

Located beneath a gallery, this cool subterranean cafe offers a range of light meals and good cafe drinks in a bohemian atmosphere. A lot of the food offerings are laid out on display for you to choose from – with the emphasis on healthy sandwiches and salads. Take the stairs on your left before the gallery.

    Café Bibliotec HELLO!

Like its name suggests, books line the walls of this cool cafe located in a converted machiya. You can get the usual range of coffee and tea drinks here, as well as light cafe lunches. Overall, this may be our favourite cafe in Kyoto, and it's worth the walk from the centre of town. Look for the plants out front.

    Komichi

This friendly little teahouse is perfectly located along the Arashiyama tourist trail. In addition to hot and cold tea/coffee drinks, it serves uji kintoki (sweet matcha over shaved ice, sweetened milk and sweet beans – sort of a Japanese Italian ice) in summer and a variety of light noodle dishes year-round. The picture menu helps with ordering. The sign is green and black on a white background.

  9. Nasa Café

Inside the shady bamboo bar built on stilts above the sand, a vibrant azure ribbon of crashing surf is the wraparound view through the drooping thatched roof. Simple Indo meals (30,000Rp) set the tone for the bare-bones rooms off the bar, which are little more than a mattress on the floor. It's one of about a dozen similar choices.

    Park Café

This hip little cafe always reminds us of a Melbourne coffeeshop. It's on the edge of the downtown shopping district and a convenient place to take a break.

    Milk Hall

This local cafe-scene landmark is also an antiques shop and, by evening, a moody bar. Live jazz plays some nights. Head two blocks down Komachi-dōri, take a left and then another left down the first alley; the door has an English sign.

    Ten Ten Café

Operated by a singer-songwriter, and a venue for lots of live music, this airy cafe is a fine spot for a drink or light meal in the Naramachi area. It serves a daily lunch special for ¥750. Look for the English sign and plants out front.

  15. Yeye's Warung

A gathering point away from the cliffs, Yeye's has an easygoing ambience, cheapish beers and tasty Western, Indonesian and vegetarian food. But pizza is the perennial number-one attraction at this popular cafe, the closest thing to being the local hangout.

  16. Kibune Club

The exposed wooden beams and open, airy feel of this rustic cafe make it a great spot to stop for a cuppa while exploring Kibune. In the winter, it sometimes cranks up the wood stove, which makes the place rather cosy. It's easy to spot.

Baan Phra Athit (Coffee & More)

When only air-conditioning will do, why not do it in style? This classy cafe features a few basic Western-Thai fusion dishes, decent coffee, and even better cakes and sweets. And all of this for less than the price of a latte back at home.

    Smoothie Blues

Expat favourite; and known for its breakfasts, as well as its sandwiches, baguettes and namesake drink.

  19. Sweet Maesalong

If you require a considerably higher degree of caffeine than the local tea leaves can offer, stop by this cosy modern cafe with an extensive menu of coffee drinks using local beans. Surprisingly sophisticated baked goods and dishes are also available. Sweet Maesalong is roughly in the middle of town.

  20. Zest Coffee Lounge

Indulge in the street-cafe lifestyle at Zest – home to the best cup of joe on the island. Idlers can nibble on ciabatta sandwiches or sticky confections while nursing their creamy caffe latte. There's a second branch in Sairee, although we prefer this location.

    Nonohana Ohka

With indoor and outdoor garden seating, this cafe is one of our favourite places for a pick-me-up when in Naramachi. The cakes are usually very good here and they go down a treat with the excellent tea. Look for the glass front and the sign reading 'cafe'.

  24. Jiwa Juice

Jiwa means 'soul', and the juices and fresh, light food here are good for the same. This popular stop has internet access, a rarity in these parts.

  25. YRG Café

This super cute coffee shop down by the train tracks is run by super talented, English-speaking Takao. 'Yellow, Red, Green' sells hip jewellery and postcards and mix CDs, not to mention whopping cups of chai latte (¥400) and nutritious, comforting meals that change weekly.
