Barbecue restaurants in Asia

  1. A

    Naughty Nuri's

This legendary expat hang-out is more sizzle than steak. Hugely popular with martini-drinkers of a certain age who wolf down chewy grilled steaks, ribs and burgers. Thursday-night grilled-tuna specials are something of a mob scene of long-lost cronies. Come for the camaraderie and ignore the lapses in the kitchen (which is mostly a barbecue out front).

    Out of Africa

The caveman in you will find it hard to resist this South African steakhouse when you spy the pig roasting on a spit in the outdoor kitchen. Something primal will respond to the fire-meets-flesh encounter and you’ll soon be devouring a selection of grilled meats, unaware of the hokey franchise theme.

  3. Suíyìshāo Kǎoròu Zhuānméndiàn

Cook your own pork belly, beef and other meats 'as you please' at this family-run BBQ joint. Sit under the space-age metallic fixtures and ask for suāncài (酸菜; pickled cabbage) or sliced potatoes to add to your tabletop grill.

    Ooh La La!

This simple place at the Treasure Island on Lantau hotel has a meat and seafood barbecue in the summer and fondue (around HK$280 to around HK$320 for two) in the winter. The terrace directly on the beach is a bonus, as is the Ooh La La! signature Pui-O-Punch.

  5. D

    Yetnalnongjang

Come to this barbecue restaurant with wood beams and traditional murals for the around ₩10000 barbecue beef. The sauces and side dishes are good, the meat chunkier than bulgogi and the place generally has a party atmosphere.

    Habibi Restaurant

A cut above most places you'll find in the Old City, the rooftop restaurant at Habibi's is made for summer evening eating. The menu is meat-heavy, with the smells of the barbeque wafting through the air to work up your appetite.

    Gallery Bar & Restaurants

This restaurant, on a terrace with an arbour overlooking South Lantau Rd, has great Mediterranean and Turkish dishes and a decent barbecue. Oven-baked thin-crust pizzas (from $85) are another must-try.

    Cabin Oak

Most chicken-and-beer places sell fried chicken, but here at this clean and modern hof (pub) it is cooked on a spit over a wood fire. Beer costs around ₩2000.

    Tony Roma's

Ribs, grills, burgers, salads and beer are the popular items at this American chain. This is one of six branches in Seoul serving up Tony's hearty brand of fare.

  10. Yīxīn Kǎo Róu

Make like a chef on the tabletop grills at this busy BBQ joint. In spite of the name, you can cook your own shellfish or vegetables (as well as meat).

  14. Takumi-ya

Hida beef on a burger budget. Adjacent to Takumi-ya's butcher shop is a casual restaurant (open 10am to 3pm) specialising in rāmen in Hida-beef broth and, for lunch, Hida gyū-don (beef and onion over rice; gyū-don and mini-rāmen combo for ¥1000). The upstairs restaurant serves yakiniku (Korean-style barbecue). It's next to the shop selling 'Total Fashion'. There's a photo menu.

  15. Huì Zhī Fèng

Chéngdū's answer to teppan-yaki and a great place to fill up before drinks on Kehua Jie. There are tables outside, but it's more fun to sit inside, around the giant horseshoe-shaped hotplate and watch the chef griddle the dishes you've just ordered. There's an English menu, but if you're looking for inspiration, the bacon-wrapped mushrooms (培根卷; péigēn juǎn; Y20) are divine. Two dishes per person are usually enough.

  16. Brazil Barbecue

The Chinese take on Brazilian churrascaria means that you'll get pork slathered in garlic, slices of ox tongue and chicken giblet – all served from long skewers. The all-you-can-eat buffet spread gives you one more reason to delay that diet. Staff offering grilled meats come round once only, so don't feel shy to call out if you want more.
