Entertainment in Asia

  1. Garden of the Master of the Nets

From March to November, music performances are held nightly from 7.30pm to 9.30pm for tourist groups at this garden. Don't expect anything too authentic.

  2. A

    Ganesh

Foreign beers at reasonable prices! Great Indian food! Live football on the telly! Brits will love this place, but so it seems do most expats in Kūnmíng. The all-day thalis (meat or vegetarian, Y38) are a tremendous deal.

  3. B

    Gallery

Traditional Thai music from 7pm to 9pm nightly. The beautiful, leafy, riverside setting marries well with the sounds. It's next to La Brasserie.

  4. C

    Gaia

Much of the Mut Mee crowd and many resident fa·ràng fill this laid-back lounge on the Mekong. There's a great drinks list, a chilled vibe and sometimes live music. It often hosts fundraisers for local charitable projects.

  5. Flip Flop Pharmacy

This open-air bar on the sands of Thong Nai Pan is the area's preferred hang-out spot.

  6. Finnegans Wake

Great, if pricey, food and drinks. Guinness on tap and an Irish bartender who also belts out the tunes. Quiet except for the weekends and Monday (half-price burgers). Don't try the chilli vodka unless you want to spend the night writhing on the ground.

    Fat Gut’z

This closet-sized ‘saloon’ combines live music and, er, fish and chips. Despite (or perhaps thanks to?) the odd whiff of chip oil, the odd combo works. Live blues every night from 9pm to midnight.

  8. Fat Daddy's

Just up the road from Bud is this ground-level bar with a leafy outdoor patio across from the beach, and a large indoor bar with pool tables. Folksy rock music is played loud and there's a big selection of cocktails and beers, including some Australian microbrews. Fat Daddy's is also popular for its generous steaks and pizzas.

    Famille Horse Shoe Bar

Pull up one of five stools in the heart of the food market and watch the world go by as the young owner plies you with wisdom and whisky. Beers cost ¥600 and shots are two-for-one.

  10. F

    Face

Sibling of the renowned Shànghǎi French Concession saloon and with the same Southeast Asian accents, Face is elegant if rather pricey (with Tetley's bitter by the pint) but a great bolthole from Běijīng's more sordid taverns. At the time of writing, accommodation was soon to be in the offing.

  12. Elope Bar

More mellow than most of the bars on the Laoying Shao strip, and with a raised balcony that enables you to sip a drink while contemplating the river. Beers start at Y20, cocktails at Y35.

    Elaine's Garden

If you want to rest your legs after visiting Guǎngdōng's giant museum, head to this tiny but elegantly decorated cafe and wine bar for a peaceful afternoon retreat.

    Arena 10

This open-air entertainment zone is the destination of choice for Bangkok’s young and beautiful – for the moment at least. Demo combines blasting beats and a NYC warehouse vibe, while Funky Villa, with its outdoor seating and Top 40 soundtrack, is more chilled.

  15. I

    e-Bar

A newer and more spacious club that attracts an older (but equally enthusiastic) crowd than U-Bar.

  16. East Shore Bar

With views of Qiánhǎi Lake, this excellent bar hits all the right notes with its low-light candlelit mood and live jazz sounds from 9.30pm (Thursday to Sunday).

  17. J

    Dunya Bar

This classy bar above the restaurant of the same name has a nice balcony and screens major sports events.

  18. K

    Drum & Bell Bar

Clamber to the roof terrace of this bar slung between its namesake towers and, on summer evenings, duck under the thicket of branches and seat yourself amid an idyllic panorama of low-rise Běijīng rooftops. Alternatively, sink without trace into one of the marshmallow-soft sofas downstairs.

    Drei Kronen 1308 Brauhaus

Ranging over three floors, with burnished beer vats, outside seating for a river perspective and English-speaking staff in fancy Bavarian togs brandishing carnivorous menus, this popular brew house brews its own. It's not cheap (small beer Y38) so target happy hour (6pm to 9pm).

  20. Downbeat Bar

Jazz kissa, which fall somewhere between cafes and bars, boast extensive jazz-record collections. This is one of the oldest (1956) in Yokohama, with over 3000 albums and some serious speakers. Occasional live music means an occasional cover charge. Look for the 2nd-floor red awning.

  21. Dongba Palace

This government run place has a less-authentic song-and-dance show.

    Dōgo Biiru-kan

Right by Dōgo Onsen Honkan, this place brews its own beer, and is a good spot for a drink and a bite to eat after a relaxing soak. The names of the beers (¥840) are allusions to novelist Natsume Sōseki and his famous novel, Botchan. There's also a decent range of food available from a picture menu (such as iwashi no karaage – fried sardines – for ¥550).

  24. Diza

Once a tatty shack that blasted music as it sold pirated DVDs, Diza has evolved into a casual hang-out at the crossroads of Sairee Village. Locals lounge on plastic chairs as they slurp their beer and people-watch.

  25. Dio Coffee

Get your laptop out, order a latte and forget for a moment that you were ever in Qīnghǎi.

  26. N

    Differ

Popular with weekending Bangkokians, this dance club's slogan is 'feel fun, feel differ'. It's across from Big C.

    Diana Café

If by any remote chance you find the pace of life on Meno too busy, head to this amazing little tropical shack par excellence. Diana couldn't be simpler: a wobbly-looking bamboo-and-thatch bar, a few tables on the sand, a hammock or two, reggae on the stereo and a chill-out zone that makes the most of the zillion-rupiah views. Like it so much you want to stay? Check out their bungalows.
