  2. Buenos Aires!

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 14 December 2010

My family and I organized many months ago to meet in Buenos Aires for Christmas, and it’s been my long-term destination ever since. The day finally arrives to head into the big city and a 650km, 10 hour day sees me drive right into the middle of downtown without any problems. Good maps make all [...]

  3. The White Continent or Bust – Antarctica

    Blog: Trans-Americas Journey - 11 December 2010

We know it’s been a few weeks since we’ve put up any new blog posts but we’ve got a good reason: we were in Antarctica! No, we didn’t drive there. LAN Airlines got us to Ushuaia (the southernmost city in the world) and back and from there we sailed along the Antarctic peninsula for 11 days on the MV Antarctic Dream. Our thanks to both companies.   Followers of our Journey know that we’ve been anticipating our Antarctic adventure since August and the planet’s most remote continent totally lived up the hype and our expectations.

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 6 December 2010

I spend a few beautiful sunny days in relaxing Mendoza, before venturing out into the mountains once again. Parque Provincial Aconcagua contains the enormous mountain of the same name, which at 6,962 meters is the tallest mountain on the continent, drawing hordes of serious mountain climbers. Passes to enter the park are expensive, and even [...]

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 2 December 2010

The differences between Argentina and previous countries are like day and night, and I’m surrounded by them at all times. The streets are clean, people are smiling and friendly and there is a lot more infrastructure. Fashion, with jeans/shorts and a T-shirt reining supreme, looks to be coming straight from North America or Europe, and [...]

  7. Falling in love with Buenos Aires

    Blog: velvet escape's blog - 30 November 2010

“Falling in love with Buenos Aires” A page from my Travel Journal Gosh I love this city! Buenos Aires (BA) is one of those unique, terribly fascinating cities that one stumbles upon, falls in love with and keeps coming back to. BA has a buzz that’s one-of-a-kind: I’m not sure how I would describe it; [...]

Blog: The Road Chose Me - 50,000kms of ebb and flow - 28 November 2010

We’re utterly exhausted when we roll into San Pedro De Atacama, Chile, and searching around town to find a campground nearly finishes us off. Rob has endured the most by far, and is so throughly done he drops the Harley twice in ten minutes, before sitting on the ground, trying not to pass out. The [...]

  13. Sandy Pedro de Atacama…

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 24 October 2010

There are two pieces of useful information about the trip into San Pedro, Chile, from Salta, Argentina. The first is that once you go through the border post exiting Argentina you don’t officially arrive into Chile until you reach the passport control offices of San Pedro de Atacama. The other is that once you have [...]

  15. Chasing waterfalls. Iguazu Falls, Argentina

    Blog: Chronicles of a year-long break-up - 22 October 2010

If you have never seen ‘Iguazu face’ you have been sorely missing out. Difficult to describe, it is a little like a cross between pure, wide-eyed, childish glee and the expression that bad actors make when faced with a slimy monster in a low-budget horror film. But under a waterfall. The problem is that the [...]

  16. The Sensational Colours of Salta

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 22 October 2010

I am sure it could be considered cheating, but due to time considerations we chose to fly from Buenos Aires rather than take a 24 hour bus trip. Shame on us, I know, but we are not hardcore bus fans so sometimes the easier option is simply the easier option. We stayed at a nice [...]

  17. Buenos Aires Take 2…

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 20 October 2010

Having not accomplished everything we wanted to in Buenos Aires, we headed back from Uruguay to spend one more night there. One of the main things we wanted to visit and is apparently pretty much a ‘must see’ in BA is the Cemeterio de la Recoleta. The problem with arriving with one day to visit [...]

  18. In Bariloche, a tale of too much talking

    Blog: Bearshapedsphere - 19 October 2010

We're finally out of the wormhole and back on solid ground, alone, unfettered, and dag gummit, untalked to. What am I talking about? Mamaj and I took a trip from Puerto Varas through to Bariloche via the Lakes Crossing (it's capital-letter worthy, look it up), and the weather was mostly good, or at least not torrential, which is a near miracle for this time of year. There will be pictures, really! The lakes district is just as pretty as I knew it would be, just as pretty as it was the last time I was here. But untalked to. What's going on?

    Blog: Chronicles of a year-long break-up - 18 October 2010

It’s 2pm on a Sunday afternoon and Buenos Aires is waking up to room-spins and a killer hangover. The kind of hangover that most people only ever dream about. The kind of hangover you get from staying out until 10am in the morning and watching the sunrise from inside the world-famous nightclub Pacha. Upstairs the [...]

a.m. Happy day!  It’s Mother’s Day here in Argentina, and I’ve just heard the best news I could have hoped for – the doctors think I’ll be able to leave here tomorrow.  I’ll still have another 5 days of treatment, but I can do that via pills in the hotel.  And then I’ll have to [...]

  21. Authentic Experiences In Buenos Aires – Part 2

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 16 October 2010

Today we decided to hit the historic centre, but first we went to see the famed Galerias Pacifico on the pedestrian shopping street of Florida.  We used the metro to get there, which is simple if you are familiar with the London Underground, and arrived mid-morning. The facade of the Galerias is grand and the [...]

  22. In Search Of Greener City Pastures… Buenos Aires Part 1

Blog: Viva Latin America! - 15 October 2010

Our arrival into Buenos Aires from Mercedes (on the overnight bus) was fraught with anxiety as we arrived 4.5 hours late. Which is to be expected on longer coach journeys, I know. The problem was that there is so much to do in Buenos Aires and we had only allowed two days to do it [...]

Dulce de leche – an Argentinean delight.  Think caramelized sweetened condensed milk.  Think caramel apples.  Think decadence defined. Argentineans are proud of their dulce de leche – with good reason.  It’s an incredibly decadent sweet that is used in a wide array of treats throughout the country.  You’ll find it layered in cakes, as filling for [...]
