Walking past this restaurant, during the day, you can see some of your (potential) dinner cooking from the windows and a cheery man slaving away over the hot coals. Argentina is renowned for it's magnificent meat and this place does not disappoint!
Even though I was in Ushuaia in summer, it was still bitterly cold and as you walk into La Rueda, the warmth of the place hits you.
The decor is simple, with wooden tables and chequered red and white table cloths, but you feel right at home. The staff greet you with a welcome smile and as they are leading you to a table, you immediately see and smell the mouth watering meats, sizzling away, over hot coals and constantly being 'basted' by the cheery man you saw earlier.
As you're seated, the wonderful buffet, with a huge selection of assorted vegetables and salads, is pointed out to you and the simple rules are explained to you: Eat all you like and just take your plate to the cheery man basting the meat and he will pile said meat onto your plate!
There is beef, lamb, chicken, pork and the 'chef' will even ask you to 'point' at which cuts of meat you would like and how well done you would like it, so even if you like your beef 'rare' he will locate those 'rare' pieces for you.
The wait staff regularly give you a 'fresh' plate, if you don't want to mix the flavours of the different meats you are having.
The buffet also has a variety of deserts, (regularly changed, I was told) and great coffee, or tea, all inclusive in the buffet (set) price,
Drinks are very reasonably priced, beer, mixed drinks and Argentian wines available.
Dinner, with a reasonable amount of drinks, should not cost you more than $45 AUD for two and you are sure to leave satisfied!
Open late, because in Argentina, they usually eat late!
