My friend Emma and I went on a 2 day trek with Carol a couple of weeks ago and had a simply amazing time. Firstly, it was lovely to be out of the hustle and bustle of the city; she took us on a 2 hour ride outside of Bariloche to a camping spot on her families land up in the hills. As soon as we got there we felt relaxed - it felt far away from any civilization and had beautiful scenery all around us. There were simple amenities including a few tents, a toilet (hole in the floor kind), a traditional cooker and plenty of firewood sourced from the local trees and bushes and Carol soon had delicious home-made empanadas cooking in the pan. After filling our bellies she selected the horses and saddled them up in traditional saddles and started our trek. Over the 2 days we passed through many kinds of terrain, from dry, dusty landscapes, through rivers and green meadows as well as rustic forests. On the camping evening she lit a fire and cooked us a delicious meal of rice and beef (from her own cows). We watched the stars and talked while the fire crackled.
Carol herself is a wonderfully warm and kind person. Her horses were exceptionally well cared for and clearly happy and very well trained. They had plenty of time to frolic free in plenty of lush green grass. They were not only good for treks but also had been trained for actual work on the farm and so had a lot of experience and training from Carol and her team. Having had a horseriding accident last year I was a little nervous to get back in the saddle but I felt very reassured when I met Carol and her horses.
We could have chosen to go on slightly cheaper treks but to me being in a small group (the max number of people Carol takes on treks is 8 but we had only 2 other people) means a really personal service and seeing well cared for horses made it completely worth the little extra...I would thoroughly recommend this trek!!!
