Getting there & away
The gradual paving of RN 40 and subsequent future services will keep transport options in flux, so get current information.
Various bus companies go to nearby Perito Moreno (AR$13, 40 minutes) at 6am, 3pm and 4pm. Sportman (491175; Senador Molina 690) has buses to Río Gallegos (AR$110, 16 hours) and Comodoro Rivadavia (AR$58, six hours) at 4pm daily. Ask about intermediary stops. La Unión (491078; cnr Av 11 de Julio & San Martín) buses head to Comodoro Rivadavia (AR$58) at 5:45am and 3pm Monday to Saturday and 4pm on Sunday.
Transportes Padilla (491140; San Martín 44) crosses the border (open 8am to 9pm or 10pm daily, often closed noon to 2pm) to Chile Chico (AR$4) several times daily.
From November to March, Chaltén Travel (www.chaltentravel.com) goes to El Chaltén (AR$160, 13 hours) on even-numbered days at 9am, stopping first in Perito Moreno.
Ferry El Pilchero (in Chile 56-67-411864) crosses Lago Buenos Aires daily from Chile Chico to Puerto Ibañez (CH$4000, vehicles CH$23, 500 per meter, three to six hours), weather depending, on Monday at 8am and 4:30pm, Thursday at 3:30pm, Friday at 5:30pm and Sunday at 2:30pm. Alternatively, it’s possible to continue overland around the lake’s southern shore to Carretera Austral and Coyhaique.
