Bus
Santiago’s old bus terminal (421-3746; cnr Pedro León Gallo & Saavedra) is eight blocks southwest of Plaza Libertad. It’s due to be replaced by a shiny new terminal in the north of town, at the corner of Av Rivadavia and Perú. They say early 2008, we say early 2009 at best. Sample destinations and fares:

Train
Santiago del Estero (actually, the adjacent twin town of La Banda) is on the Buenos Aires–Tucumán train line, which runs twice weekly. Trains run from La Banda station (427-3918) to Tucumán (4½ hours) twice weekly. They also leave twice weekly to Retiro (22 hours).
Air
Aerolíneas Argentinas (422-4335; 24 de Septiembre 547) flies four times weekly to Buenos Aires (AR$614).
