  1. A

    La Vieja Estación

The best established of the Balcarce peñas, with a stage, wooden tables and three live shows per night. Tasty empanadas and locro (a stew of maize, beans, beef, pork and sausage), and a wide range of other choices.

  2. B

    Plaza de Almas

Offering an eclectic mix of artesanía shops, a bar, lounge, cafe and restaurant, this Tucumán classic has seamlessly moved into Salta. The most atmospheric place for a drink near the plaza.

  3. C

    Macondo

After all the folklórica music on this street, the indie ’90s–’00s mix in this trendy bar might come as a relief. Popular with locals and tourists, it keeps it lively until late.

  4. D

    Casa de Cultura

This cultural center near the plaza has regular live events. It runs the whole gamut here: you’re as likely to catch a Houdini-style magician as a classical ballet performance.

  5. E

    La Estación

Set right in the heart of the Balcarce nightlife strip, this one-time cinema is now one of several popular discotecas (nightclub) in the zone.

  6. F

    Uno Bar

This intimate bar was popular at time of research for its pricy but well-mixed drinks, terrace, cozy interior and trance/drum 'n' bass.

  7. G

    Peña Boliche Balderrama

With cheap but unremarkable food, this is Salta’s most touristy peña. It can be a lot of fun, but feels contrived these days.

  8. H

    Cine Ópera

This is the most central of Salta’s several cinemas, showing Hollywood standards and more offbeat fare in original version.

  9. I

    Teatro Provincial

Great new theater in a ’40s building on the plaza.
