Buses from Humahuaca (AR$11, three hours) leave daily at 8:30am and 10:30am, and also 6pm Monday to Friday. The return service leaves Iruya at 1:30pm and 3:15pm daily, and 6am Monday to Saturday. Don’t set your watch by it.

There is 50km of ripio road to negotiate off RN 9. In summer it often becomes impassable due to rain. You’ll often see villagers hitchhiking – a good way to meet locals. A parking fee (AR$2) is charged entering Iruya.
