24 hours would never be enough in Buenos Aires, but if that’s all you’ve got, these expert tips taken from the Buenos Aires Encounter guide will help you make a truly delicious day (and night ) of it.

Start a marathon day with an alfresco caffeine jolt at La Biela, then venture into the fascinating, ornate Cementerio de la Recoleta. Next up, take a taxi to elegant Av de Mayo to stare at grand architecture and pop into literary coffeehouse Café Tortoni.

Take some obligatory photos at Casa Rosada, then hang a right at Defensa and venture into boho San Telmo. Tuck into a juicy steak at Gran Parrilla del Plata (it used to be a butcher shop in the 1930s so it’s got a meaty history) and poke through the antiques at Mercado de San Telmo. Saddle up for a drink at the historic Bar Plaza Dorrego, (in Plaza Dorrego) but make sure you sit outside so you can watch the tango dancers.

Can’t get enough tango? Attend a slick dinner show at El Querandí or observe from the sidelines at a milonga (social dance) at Confitería Ideal.

If you like a quick hit of travel, check out 24 hours in Edinburgh or 24 hours in Fès.

A great fast and cheap thing to see is the A line subway, it still has the original oak cars from 1913, complete with manual doors, get off at the Castro Barros stop, and check out Las Violetas Cafe, it won´t be too touristy, but just as good. www.lasvioletas.com
