Lonely Planet review for Teatro Colón

Started in 1880 and finished in 1908, the Teatro Colón is a major landmark and gorgeous world-class facility for opera, ballet and classical music. It was the southern hemisphere’s largest theater until the Sydney Opera House was built in 1973. Opening night featured Verdi’s Aïda, and visitors have been wowed ever since. Even at times of economic hardship, the elaborate Colón remains a high national priority.
