Lonely Planet review for El Ateneo Grand Splendid

Though part of the El Ateneo chain, this is no ordinary bookstore – the Grand Splendid occupies a fabulous antique cinema and theater where Carlos Gardel, Argentina’s iconic tango legend, crooned on stage to an adoring crowd. Today, bookshelves crowd the mezzanine. Relive the theatrical magic with coffee on the 1920s-style stage.

Even if you don't want books don't miss this place!

    molesey recommends this,

There was an article in a German newspaper that listed this as one of the most beautiful bookstores in the world. Originally a historic beaux arts theatre, it has been renovated into a multi-tiered bookstore. Now you can sit on the stage where the cafe is, and look out on the shelves of books, or go sit in one of the gilded box seats to read a book, or sit on one of the upper balconies and look down on this gorgeous space while exploring cds and dvds. Go to look and sip a coffee on the stage. When you enter it looks like a regular store but remember its the original lobby, so you have to walk into the back where you'll think you are Dorothy entering Oz. --- Located right in the heart of downtown shopping near the intersection of Santa Fe Avenue and Callao Avenue.
