Lonely Planet review for La Cabrera

If you eat at only one steakhouse in BA, make it this one. Some of the city's best meats are grilled up and presented to you on wooden boards, and in huge portions, along with a few dainty condiments (olives, sun-dried tomatoes, goat's cheese) on the side. The ambience is elegant, and considerably less stuffy than most Palermo Viejo eateries.

    vastly overrated tourist trap

    jjgittes does not recommend this,

If you want to feel like something akin to a sausage in sausage factory go here cos it's just a conveyor belt. The steaks are ok as are the wines but much better food is available at many restuarants close by.

    Not particularly great

    cabenuevo does not recommend this,

The steak was good, but not particularly better than other places I tried in Buenos Aires. Seriously, the long queue, long waiting time for food, not-so-good service, and high price. My friends and I didn't think it's all worth it. We liked other small restaurants we found on the streets better.

    Great dinner

The best steak dinner we had. Check their website -- they sometimes have specials like free champagne on your birthday.

Waiting almost two hours to be mistreated

    angmaga does not recommend this,

Long line in front the restaurant, the recepcionist lied to us saying it was 45 minutes for a table what turned to be almost two hours. People that arrived after us sat before us, in a disorganized line. Eventualy we could sit and have a meal, the waiter, Carlos, was rude all the time and at the end of our awful experience he spent five minutes explaining about tips work in Argentina.

Don't waste your time going there. There are lots of good restaurants in Buenos Aires, cheaper and with good meals.

Educated travelers DO NOT go to this restaurant

    melissaargentina does not recommend this,

They will tell you 45 minutes for a table when they really mean 2 hours. After that the food will be horribly delayed and they will not excuse common sense issues like half of your partie's food ariving 30 minutes before the other half. The managers are really poorly informed about the activities going on at each table and if you make the slightest complaint, don't expect anything but a "disculpe". For me, if you are going to wait and pay RIDICULOUS tourist prices, you should be treated like a tourist and respected. If you don't know any spanish, don't expect to get any relief fromt he horrible manager Luis.

    Good for: big prices

    Not good for: service

    My best sweet bread too!

    u007 recommends this,

We totally agree about what we read here except they accept to make reservations (at least we got one, in April); perfectly cooked, huge portion, 13 side dishes (some cold, some warm) justify the price (higher than average but so cheap compared with prices in France, for example); and with a very good Ciclos Malbec, a beautiful dinner!

Good for: Romance, atmosphere, food, service

It's worth the wait, but don't order too much!

    noahaxe recommends this,

We had a superb evening at this great, little Palermo spot. Delicious steak, and plenty of sides. Despite the 20, or so, minute wait, which, by the way, was made easier with complimentary champagne and hors d'oeuvres, we enjoyed every minute of our dining experience. Make a reservation, and one main course, (steak!), is enough for two or three hungry eaters. Disfruta!

    The Best of the Bife

    kiwirubia recommends this,

I don't know how romantic a slab of bife that looks like it weighs as much as a baby might be, however this is a fairly accurate description of the mighty bife portions at la cabrera! This is one resturant where you cannot go wrong. The waiters are generally helpful, although if theyre busy they don't joke around much. There's no need to order more than one dish between two people - not only do you get your mini cow served medium rare and mouth watering, the complete compliment of side dishes will fulfil all your tastebuds cravings. The best part...if you return a few months later you might be lucky enough to find they've changed a few of them as well.
The atmosphere is charming. From the champagne and chorizo samples on arrival while you wait for a table (be in quick...they dont usually take bookings and the restaurant fills fast - in a large group you may be waiting an hour or more to be seated), to the soft lighting and outdoor tables, there is no reason not to enjoy your night out, just don't plan on going out afterwards - you'll be too stuffed to move.
While there are two La Cabreras, the original in my opinion is the better. Dont be fooled when they offer you a table at the second restaurant because the original one is busy!
In terms of pricing in Buenos Aires, La Cabrera is well above average, however for what you are getting it is worth spending the extra.
