A spectacular voyage across the Antarctic Circle.

Crossing the fabled Antarctic Circle has held fascination for adventurers and explorers since Captain Cook first did so in 1773. Join us as we venture towards the line and discover a whole new world of little explored bays and coves - a treasure trove of exciting and remote new places, where only a few are fortunate to visit. This is a journey filled with wonderful discoveries and the joy of exploration in an untouched wonderland. With regular landings on our zodiacs, we walk among the multitude of penguin rookeries and seal colonies in the vicinity of Deception Island, Gerlache Strait, Paradise Bay and the Lemaire Channel. Throughout the voyage, there are ample opportunities to enjoy our wildlife encounters and the dramatic landscapes of the most pristine region of the planet, under the guidance of our expert staff and crew. We will leave our trusty vessel at King George Island to join our flight to Punta Arenas, filled with memories to last a lifetime.

Itinerary

Day 1 Embark Ushuaia

You will be warmly greeted by the crew and expedition staff as you embark Polar Pioneer in the afternoon. Sailing down the Beagle Channel, we will settle into shipboard life and enjoy our first meal on board.

Days 2-3 Drake Passage

Some of us will approach this historic crossing with more than a little trepidation. But despite its reputation, there are many times when the Drake Passage resembles a lake, with lazy Southern Ocean swells rolling under the keel. On the other hand, we sometimes encounter rough crossings with large waves. The size of the waves and the force of the gale will take on gigantic proportions when related around the fire back home. The mood on board is definitely casual. A favourite pastime is to stand at the stern deck watching the many seabirds, including majestic albatrosses and giant petrels, following in our wake, skillfully using the air currents created by the ship to gain momentum. During our Drake crossing, we will commence our lecture program about the wildlife, geology, history and geography of the Antarctic Peninsula. Antarctica is a photographers’ paradise, for the professional and amateur alike. There will be discussions about how to protect your equipment from salt water, and tips about taking good pictures. Nearing the tip of the Peninsula towards the end of day three, excitement reaches fever pitch with everyone on the bridge watching for our first iceberg. The ocean takes on a whole new perspective once we are below the Antarctic Convergence and are surrounded by the surreal presence of floating ice sculptures. The memory of your first big iceberg sighting is likely to remain with you forever. With fair winds and a following sea, we may make our first landing on the evening of day 3.

Days 4-8 Antarctic Peninsula and South of the Circle

We explore the Peninsula’s west coast, with time to watch the frenzied activities of penguin parents and chicks, to Zodiac cruise amongst icebergs and revel in the unparalleled beauty of vast, Antarctic land and icescapes. Divers immerse themselves in underwater exploration, while kayakers slice through a fascinating labyrinth of waterways. Further south, ice conditions govern our movements. Whether we cross the Circle via the ‘inner route’ or the Bellingshausen Sea, we celebrate in style. With luck we reach magnificent Crystal Sound, pass through the Gullet and steam on to Marguerite Bay. We may visit historical Stonington, Pourquoi Pas and Detaille islands.

Days 9-10 Drake Passage

Time to leave the icy wonderland for warmer climes. With Anvers and Brabant islands astern, we return to Drake Passage, our winged companions soaring and dipping in our wake. As icebergs fade on the horizon, memories hold fast as we reflect on a rich diversity of experiences. We may round Cape Horn if conditions permit, before indulging in a special farewell dinner.

Day 11 Arrive Ushuaia where trip concludes
