I spent a week in Algeria earlier this month, and visited Algiers, Mzab Valley, Djemila and Tipasa (day trip). I really enjoyed it, and would recommend everything that I did. I didn’t have enough time to see many other things (southern Sahara, Timmimoun, Timgad, Annaba, Oran) which could be even more interesting – I may have to go back! The coastline around Tipasa is amazing, not to be missed, and the setting of the Roman ruins is really unique. It also has a pretty harbour. I really loved…
The "Black market" Rate for Euros is currently 180 Algerian Dinar for 1 Euro. The official rate is a bit more than 120 Dinar for 1 Euro right now.
I found it very easy to change unofficially. Just asked around (I speak french). Since I dislike changing on the street there are plenty of options. Some shops change, even a small convenience store in Setif had a drawer full of Dinar notes and was more like an exchange bureau. In some (alcohol) shops I was asked when paying if I wanted to change at…
I am planning to spend two to three days in Annaba in November and the same length of time in Algiers. I have not been able to find any hotels with seriously good ratings in Annaba, and the good ones in Algiers cost a fortune. I have been looking on Booking.com and Hotels.com sites but also some general Google searches. Any suggestions? I prefer 4-star, newish hotels that are clean and don't have the smell of smoke or mold. Thanks in advance for any useful responses.
I’m going to Algeria for a week later this month/early October, have the flights booked and got my visa pretty easily by post from the Embassy in London. Since I've got such a short time, to get a taste of a few different parts of Algeria, my plan is to spend two days in Algiers, two in Ghardaia / Mzab (by air), and two days visiting Djemila (including travel there and back). Here are my questions, any help appreciated:
1) Do I need a permit to go to Ghardaia? I saw a reference to it on this…
I'll be in Algiers for business but have one day before my boss will come :-). Could you suggest agency who provide day tour service from 09:00-10:00 till evening.
I have read post on visa here, it looks rather good, so provided that you have a hotel reservation -
is there any reason to doubt that you will be granted a tourist visa?
Thanks in advance
Hi and hope you can help
I've read the past osts on Thorn Tree (thanks to all) and the usual travel warnings etc but as a seasoned backpacker it seems Algeria is a great place. Will be there for 13 days in mid to late October and like to see as much as possible . So a few questions if people who have been there can give me their thoughts:
what are the must "things to see" in that short time??
any particular things "not to do"??
how is the current security situation in both cities and elsewhere?
Can anyone tell me the train schedule from Constantine to Touggourt? Looks like there is one a day but I can't find the times. Also could someone tell me if they travelled this route by bus or share taxi and how they manged it and how long it took.Thanks.
There is quite an extensive network of youth hostels across Algeria in all the major cities and some of the quieter places as well. They are very reasonably priced, between 300 to 500 Dinar which is around 1.67 euros to 2.80. As in general being a foreigner they allot you an entire room for security sakes. The majority of hostels are clean and well run with staff on site all the time. The only difficulty is that they do not take bookings or reservations due to 'no shows' in the past. I found…
