The physical rating gives you an idea of how much huffing and puffing you can expect on the trip. While generalisations are always tricky, a summary of our ratings follows:

These trips are a relaxing break. You don't have to worry about doing anything physically demanding unless you want to.

Some easy physical activities included in your trip. No physical preparation is required to make the most of the journey.

Be prepared for some serious physical activity. The majority of activities included on this trip will be challenging. The fitter you are, the more you will enjoy your holiday.

Intrepid’s highest physical rating. Get ready for a heart-pumping adventure with plenty of challenges and some extreme conditions. You will be required to be seriously fit for this trip as difficult activities are included.

Culture Shock Ratings

The culture shock rating considers the level of development in the location, the area's infrastructure and how easy it is to access services. It also takes into consideration how different the food and customs are and whether English is widely spoken. While generalisations are always tricky, here’s a summary of the ratings:

Rating 1

This is the least confronting of Intrepid's product range. English is the native language and the food, customs and access to services will be familiar to you.

Rating 2

You will probably have experienced food like this in restaurants back home and English is commonly spoken. Services are available most of the time but there may be some cultural differences.

Rating 3

Expect some culture shock. You will be exposed to signs of poverty and access to services may be sporadic. The food will be quite different to home and English speakers harder to find. Respecting the local culture will make it easier to fit in and really experience the location.

Rating 4

The comforts of home are more of a rarity. English is not common and the food will be quite different to what you are used to. It is important to observe some of the local customs to not cause offence. Many of the locals' standard of living may be confronting.

Rating 5

You're really out there! You'll need to pay specific attention to health and hygiene. A large proportion of locals' living conditions are a world away from standards you are used to. You may have difficulty finding an English speaker and there is little or no access to services. Paying heed to local customs is essential.

Itinerary

Day 1 Dar es Salaam

Welcome to the tropical coast of Tanzania. Stay beside gorgeous Kipepeo Beach and laze by the water, spot locals herding camels along the beach or perhaps visit nearby villagers. This is the perfect way to ease into the East African family adventure.

Days 2-5 Zanzibar

Tour exotic island plantations to see how spices including vanilla, cinnamon and ginger are made. Relax on Zanzibar's sandy beaches and splash in the warm Indian Ocean - or perhaps take a dhow boat trip around the islands.

Day 6 Dar es Salaam

Travel back to Dar es Salaam and enjoy more time relaxing on tropical beaches.

Days 7-8 Usambara Mountains

Journey into the heart of Tanzania to the Usambara Mountains. Take a walk from Lushoto to the Irente Viewpoint for amazing views over the region. For a different insight into rural Africa, visit a cultural centre and stop by a working farm.

Days 9-10 Marangu

Rise early to catch a glimpse of Mt Kilimanjaro before visiting an inspirational school for street kids. Then soak up the day-to-day life of the Chagga people who live on the slopes of this mighty mountain.

Day 11 Arusha/Karatu

Meet the very special kids of the Amani Children's Home in Moshi, which gives street children a safe place to stay as well as educational and emotional support. Pass through Arusha, the safari capital of Tanzania, situated at the base of Mt Meru. Explore a wide variety of bars and restaurants before staying the night in Karatu.

Days 12-13 Serengeti National Park

The vast grassy plains of the Serengeti National Park shelter big cats, wildebeest, zebras and gazelles. Travel out on thrilling game drives to spot them in the early morning and late afternoon. Camp in the park, falling asleep to its nocturnal sounds.

Day 14 Ngorongoro Crater

Jump in a 4x4 with a local guide to explore Ngorongoro Crater - a vast, extinct volcano that is believed to house one of the biggest populations of wildlife in East Africa. Meet some of Africa's iconic crocodiles, lizards, turtles and super-poisonous snakes at Meserani Snake Park.

Day 15 Mto wa Mbu

Learn about the Maasai way of life on a guided walk through Mto Wa Mbu village.

Days 16-17 Nairobi

Admire the long-legged, gentle giants at Langata Giraffe Sanctuary. End the family adventure by picking up colourful mementos from one of Nairobi's bustling markets.
