Day 1 Join Nairobi
Please make your way to the group hotel for overnight accommodation. The rest of the day is at leisure.
Day 2 To Tarangire National Park
This morning you will be collected from your hotel, we depart Nairobi and travel to Tarangire National Park (approx. 7 hours). Tonight we camp at a bush campsite, with the sounds of the African bush surrounding us.
Day 3 Tarangire National Park
Tarangire National Park boasts a great amount of wildlife and is famous for it's large concentration of elephants and lions. The hilly landscape dotted with baobab trees is diverse with a mixture of bushland, savannah and swamps. After a morning of guided safari walks in Tarangire National Park we make our way to our camp near the village of Mto Wa Mbu where we spend the night surrounded by acacia glades and enjoy the sounds of the region's rich birdlife.
Day 4 Ngorongoro Crater
We leave from the base of the Rift Valley escarpment this morning and journey up to the Ngorongoro Highlands. The Ngorongoro Crater is home to many thousands of animals and thanks to anti-poaching patrols, is now one of the few places in East Africa where visitors can see a black rhino. From the rim we descend into the crater for a morning of superb game viewing. Please bring some warm clothing as it can be cold. In the late afternoon we make our way, via Olduvai Gorge, to our next camp in the Serengeti National Park.
Day 5 to 6 Serengeti National Park
For the next two days we enjoy game drives through the endless plains of the Serengeti and camping within the park. It is the annual migration for which the Serengeti is perhaps most famous and if we are lucky we will witness part of this incredible phenomenon. Over a million wildebeest and hundreds of thousands of zebra move south from the northern hills to the southern plains for the short rains every October and November, and then meander west and north after the long rains in April, May and June. We explore the different vegetation and habitats of the Serengeti ecosystem, following the times of day when wildlife is most active. At any time of the year, however, game viewing in the Serengeti is exciting and the experience is unique. Camping adds another dimension to the adventure and allows us to be right there in the bush at grass roots level.
Day 7 Speke Bay on Lake Victoria
Today we spend some of the day relaxing at Speke Bay, after our hectic schedule of early mornings and late evenings. Speke Bay is located on the south-eastern shore of Lake Victoria in Tanzania, East Africa. It is a beautiful spot just 15 kilometres from the Serengeti National Park so there is of course more opportunity to view wildlife as we towards the park boundary. We overnight at the Speke Bay hotel (note - there may be shared bathroom facilities).
Day 8 Drive to Rift Valley escarpment
Today we cross at the Isabania border post from Tanzania into Kenya. We may change safari vehicles on the Kenyan side (depending on current government requirements at the time of our safari) before making our way to our bush camp near the Rift Valley escarpment.
Day 9 to 10 Masai Village and Masai Mara game drives
This morning we visit a Masai village where we have the opportunity to learn and experience many things about the Masai tribespeople. We then walk down to the Masai Mara Game Reserve entrance gate and this afternoon explore the reserve by safari vehicle. The Masai Mara is the northern part of the Serengeti eco-system. Between July and October each year over a million wildebeest, as well as many thousands Zebra’s, Thompson’s Gazelles and Elands migrate from the Serengeti to the Masai Mara for the dry season (the corresponding loop of their circuit in the south). We will spend the first afternoon wildlife viewing on route to our camp. The following day we have opportunity for a full day of wildlife encounters during game drives in the Masai Mara.
Day 11 Final safari and drive to Nairobi
This morning we have one last opportunity for a game drive in the Masai Mara. In the early afternoon we drive to Nairobi. We say farewell to our Kenyan crew on arrival in Nairobi where our trip concludes.
