Octopus Bottoms-Up Club
A short stroll from Oginga Odinga Rd, this popular bar has two pool tables, a foosball table, its own disco and more Michael Jackson posters than we're comfortable with. With a largely male crowd and lots of beer flowing, single females may not find it the most appealing of places.

Pôle Linguistique de l'Institut Français
If you intend to spend more than just a brief holiday in Senegal, a Wolof course is definitely a good investment. The linguistic branch of the Institut Français, Pôle Linguistique de l'Institut Français runs recommended courses. It's also a good place to brush up on your French.

Perima's
It's worth venturing into the suburbs to sample Perima's authentic South Indian cuisine, served in a colourfully decorated room that avoids the usual clichés of the genre. The spicy curries will have your taste buds swaying in time to the Bollywood soundtrack.

Borj Eddar
This restaurant overlooking the sea has a menu of excellent fresh fish and seafood dishes. The next door Restaurant de la Plage has a similar menu and the same views. There’s little to choose between them: both have glass-fronted terraces overlooking the ocean.

Bar-Restaurante El Puerto
Specialising in - what else? - fresh fish, this too-bright (the fluorescent lights lend it a bit of a fast-food air) place by the port is one of the best spots in town to try local delicacies such as grilled peto and medregal (local fish).

Café Restaurant La Noria
This café is tucked away in the Bou Jeloud Gardens next to an old waterwheel – a delightful retreat from the bustle of the city. The shady courtyard is perfect to relax in, and in addition to drinks and juices, there’s a good dining menu if you’re peckish.

Hôtel de l'Indépendance
This is the most notable of the hotel bars, with its rooftop bar by the pool. It is worth coming to have a drink here if only for the fantastic views at sunset - although the height of the parapet means you have to sit on the table to enjoy them.

Sax Pub
Forget the name, there is no jazz here, but plenty of action. It started out pretty sane with a good mix of African and Western tunes, but lately things have become pretty wild with working girls and an 'anything goes' atmosphere.

Main Market
Kisumu's Main Market is one of Kenya's most animated, and certainly one of its largest, now spilling out onto the surrounding roads. If you're curious or just looking for essentials like suits or wigs, it's worth a stroll around.

Yewedale
Thanks to some of the city's best azmaris performing here, this place is resoundingly popular and you may have trouble finding a seat. There's no sign, so just look for the thatched twin-peaked roof above its entrance.
