Africa Centre
For too long if you wanted to see the cream of African contemporary art you would most likely have to search for it outside of the continent. The Africa Centre, aims to change that. This initiative by the Enthoven family, which owns the wine estate Spier, has an ambitious agenda: to document, foster and celebrate the contemporary arts of Africa as well as African artists working in the diaspora.

St George Cathedral
Commissioned by Emperor Menelik commemorating his stunning 1896 defeat of the Italians in Adwa, the Piazza St George Cathedral was completed in 1911. The Holy of Holies' outer walls are covered in paintings and mosaics by renowned artists, like Afewerk Tekle. Also there is a museum which contains Ethiopia's best collection of ecclesiastical paraphernalia outside St Mary of Zion in Aksum.

Greatmore Studios
The pioneer of the Woodstock art scene, Greatmore Studios was set up in 1998 to provide studio space for local artists. Three of the 14 studios are reserved for visiting overseas artists with the idea of providing transfer of skills and cross-cultural stimulation of ideas and creativity. Visitors are welcome to stroll around the studios which include those of five resident artists.

Escuela Insular de Artesanía
Beyond the museum is Escuela Insular de Artesanía, the island handicrafts school, which runs a shop where you can buy tobacco, embroidery, ceramics, baskets and other goods. To get to the shop, head into the school's main patio and up the stairs on your right.

Oppo Atelier
Oppo Atelier is an association of welders that makes funky sculptures from scrap metal near the Palais du Peuple. You can watch the statues, large and small, being made and if you bring a picture they will do custom work.
