Restaurants in Africa

  1. A

    De Soete Inval

Known primarily for its choice of 40 different pancakes, this cheerful place also does a fine Indonesian rijstafel (rice with many dishes).

  2. B

    Douyria

Try this for romance: candlelit dinner in a nook lined with purple and green cushions, all on a terrace atop the Taourirt Kasbah. Go with the specialty couscous and vaguely sweet milk brik (pastry) for dinner, and come back together tomorrow for breakfast under the umbrella – ouch, those ironwork chairs get hot.

  3. C

    Patisserie-Glacier des Habouss

The magnetic appeal is irresistable on balmy evenings, when all strolls lead here for French éclairs (Dh7) and Moroccan pastries and ice cream. In the mornings, trekkers and locals alike line up for good fresh baguettes (Dh10), croissants (Dh2.5) and coffee.

  4. D

    Pizzeria Veneziano

A bright, good-value place, Veneziano serves tasty thin-crust pizzas with some good local toppings like desert herbs and goat cheese, plus the usual pastas, real Italian espresso and a large menu of panachés (Dh15).

  5. E

    Restaurant 3 Thés

The wrought-iron sidewalk seating and get-cosy interiors say Paris café, but the menu says tasty vegetarian tajines (Dh30), cheeseburgers (Dh35), meat tajines with figs, prunes and almonds (Dh55).

  6. F

    Restaurant la Kasbah

With pleasant terraces overlooking the Taourirt Kasbah, this restaurant is inevitably popular with exhausted sightseers, and makes a well-spiced beef couscous.

  7. G

    A Table

This slick loungey place features parquet floors and wood furnishings and doubles as a teashop in the afternoon. Its forte? Métro fare with a sophisticated twist, such as filet mignon au thé rouge (tenderloin of beef flavoured with red tea). One minus: there's no view from the terrace.

  8. H

    Cap Ouest

Light meals are available at this buzzing eatery overlooking the harbour. Live music on weekends.

    Chez Alexandre

The paltry bill, cool staff, copious Creole daily specials and hearty sandwiches here are sure to keep you feeling satisfied.

  10. J

    Chez Loulou

The most iconic Creole case (house) for miles around, with a distinctive turquoise facade on the main drag. The belt-bustingly good samosas and macatias continue to torment us! Good sandwiches and takeaway meals at lunchtime, too.

  12. K

    Chez Noë

A long-standing institution, Chez Noë is almost a rite of passage in Cilaos, but some say it rests on its laurels. It churns out invigorating Creole favourites such as sausage with lentils and gratin de chouchou (choko; a green squash-like vegetable that is served baked).

  13. L

    Chez Popo Supermarket

Self-caterers should head for the well-stocked Chez Popo Supermarket in Trou aux Biches. If you spend more than Rs 2000 the owner will deliver your purchases to your accommodation upon request.

  14. Cilantro

While there are a few decent restaurants in Flic en Flac, you need to know where to look. For the very best (and extremely expensive) options, head to some of the better hotel restaurants, such as Cilantro or Ginger Thai at the Hilton. Nonguests should reserve in advance.

  15. M

    Coco Beach

This eatery overlooking the beach has garnered high praise for its grills and ultra-fresh fish, salads and tapas. It's also a good place to hang out and just enjoy the tropical atmosphere and fashionable buzz with a fresh Dodo beer in hand.

  16. N

    Coco de Mer

This excellent Seychellois restaurant serves up top-notch fish dishes, curries and all manner of seafood. Each meal is accompanied by a delicious selection of salads and a lentil soup, so you're unlikely to leave empty. The Saturday evening buffet is excellent value.

  17. O

    DCP

Fish lovers, you'll find nirvana here: the DCP has a wide assortment of fish delivered daily from the harbour. Order it grilled, à la vapeur (steamed) or raw, accompanied with a curcuma, pineapple or Roquefort sauce.

  18. Domaine Anna

You'll need a taxi or rental car to get here, but you'll be really glad you made the trip. Flic en Flac's most refined dining experience sits in colonial-style pavilions with gauzy netting, wooden banisters and sky-scraping cane in the distance. The predominantly Chinese menu may seem surprising considering the surrounds, but the food is excellent – locals come from all over the island to get their frequent fix of crab, calamari and succulent lobster.

  19. P

    Ginger Thai

Transport your taste buds to the 'land of smiles' at this elegant option on the grounds of the lovely Hilton resort in Wolmar. The streamers woven through the slatted ceiling are undeniably Asian in theme, and the signature dishes (prawns in a rich green curry, roasted duck, spiced vegies etc) are refined and authentic.

  20. Q

    Hidden Reef

Pronounced 'Eden Reef' by most locals, this popular spot features a dozen tables spread around a garden of lazy palms sprouting up from the crushed coral underfoot. The ambience is dimly lit and romantic – you'll need a torch to thumb through your menu (provided, of course), and when you can't decide what to order the waiter will let you try half-and-half appetiser samplers to go with your seafood main. The complimentary shot of homemade coffee rum is the perfect way to end the meal.

  21. R

    La Bobine

This sprightly restaurant with an exotic feel – the wood and thatch are imported from Madagascar – enjoys a perfect location, slap bang on the beach. The wide-ranging menu features delicious fish or meat dishes, such as assiette de poissons fumés (a combo platter of smoked fish). There's also a snack section (until 5pm), with a choice of sandwiches, salads and light meals.

  23. S

    La Case à Pain

Hmm! We can still smell the scent of freshly baked pain frotté à la vanille (a variety of bread flavoured with vanilla) wafting from the door (available on certain days only). Its other offerings, including brioches, are worth the dental bills, too.

  24. T

    La Cravache d'Or

La Cravache d'Or enjoys an absolutely gorgeous setting right on the beach, making it perfect for a romantic meal. The small daily changing menu features meat and fish dishes, although vegetarians can be catered for. Reserve in advance on weekends, and at any time you'd like to be sure of sitting at one of the sea-view tables.

  25. U

    La Marmite Mauricienne

This basic but sweet place down the road beyond L'Assiette du Nord has a pleasant outdoor feel, with lots of tables on the terrace (although sadly it's on a rather busy road). The menu is Mauritian, featuring mostly seafood, noodles and curries.

  26. V

    L'Assiette du Nord

A popular option where you can opt for the terrace or a slightly smarter dining area behind the fish-tank partition. Seafood features strongly, served in Chinese, Indian and Creole style. Try fish cooked in banana leaf with madras sauce or perhaps prawns in garlic butter.

    La Vague Gourmande

Since the '80s Claude Jaminet has been satisfying ice-cream devotees in his refreshingly attitude-free den and we know why. There are lots of original flavours, such as litchis (lychee) and cœur de boeuf (custard apple).
