La Maison Bleue
Reservations are necessary at this elegant riad restaurant. The setting is intimate and romantic, with diners serenaded by an oud player (replaced by livelier Gnawa song and dance at the end of the evening). You’ll be treated to an array of cooked salads, tajines, couscous and bastilla (savoury pastries), plus filo pastry desserts. Top marks for presentation and atmosphere.

Fez Brasserie
Set in the grounds of Kampala's first boutique hotel, the Emin Pasha, this restaurant has quickly won over the discerning local crowd thanks to a fusion menu that includes flavours from five continents. Highlights from the ever-evolving menu include the signature aubergine tower with goats cheese, roast peppers and pesto, Moroccan lamb and Cuban spatchcock poussin… impressive stuff! Vegetarians are also well represented.

Moghul Room
Cairo’s best Indian restaurant specialises in mild North Indian–style curries and kebabs, with an emphasis on tandoori dishes. Though it’s a long taxi ride from Downtown, the opulent decor, good food and live sitar music make it worthwhile. There’s a wide range of vegetarian options (from E£35 to E£45) and an extensive wine list.

Cape to Cairo Restaurant
The most popular tourist restaurant in Swakopmund serves up a gourmet variety of dishes from across the continent. Their game meats are exceptional, though vegetarians will have no problem feasting here on hearty chapatis and other veggie treats. The wine-list here is extensive, and the clientele is usually overlanders from the attached Grüner Kranz hotel.

Hipócrates
Across from Casa/Museo de Colón, in an old cottage, this charming vegetarian restaurant has a generous menu del día (set menu), sparkling green-and-white décor and a small patio, complete with bubbling fountain. All the vegetarian mainstays are here, including seitan kebabs, vegetarian lasagne and imaginative salads.

Phoenician Restaurant
This new garden restaurant, tucked away behind the Sarit Centre, may well be the first Lebanese restaurant in Kenya. We've heard mixed reports of the food, but there's plenty for veggies and with more starters than main courses, assembling your own mixed mezze offers plenty of scope for a Middle East feast. Live music on Friday.

L’Aubergine
This white-walled, candlelit bistro devotes half its menu to vegetarian dishes, such as blue-cheese ravioli and aubergine moussaka. You can’t go wrong with most of the cheesier, creamier items, and the calming soundtrack accompanying dinner is a soothing contrast to the average Cairo street noise.

Pizzeria Roma
This pizzeria has a bright fast-food style interior, with the scooter outside services the home-delivery business. The food is good with several vegetarian options to satisfy the stomach, while the wood oven gives the place a pleasing aroma (the false fireplace is fooling no one!).

La Chascona
This restaurant has the lot: cutting-edge design, innovative food, young, fashionable staff and even super-stylish loos. Try the healthy cazuelita de verduras salteadas (a casserole of briskly steamed vegetables), made with market-fresh veg seasoned to perfection.

Thai Gardens
Slightly out of the centre in the affluent suburb of Anfa, but worth seeking out for its excellent Thai cuisine, this place is another top-notch option. The vast menu of Thai classics is refreshingly inventive and makes a good choice for vegetarians.

Keur N'Deye
Highly recommended, this place offers well-prepared Senegalese specialities and a good range of vegetarian dishes. Most nights there will be a griot playing the kora, and this is a great place to watch a performance at close quarters.

Olive Garden
English-run, with outside tables on the promenade, the copious menu includes plenty of vegetarian choices such as vegetable kebabs and meatless goulash and chilli. Carnivorous folk may prefer the daily roast beef and Yorkshire pud.

Cat Man Du
This groovy diner-cum-cocktail bar serves international fusion-style tucker (and Cuban cigars) in barlike surrounds. Carnivores might like the kudu fillet in red wine and vegos are extremely well catered for.

Restaurante Ciné Nacional
A dark, windowless place just opposite Pic-Nic in the cinema building and known for its curries (which should be ordered in advance). Portions are small but it's a reliable bet for vegetarians.

Casa's top Chinese restaurant is a welcome break from tajine if you've been in Morocco for some time. It's an excellent choice for vegetarians with plenty of meat-free options on offer.

Maharaja Restaurant
The 'stylish' decor is a bit dated, though the large selection of Indian dishes (including vegetarian options) is perfect if you're looking for relief from pap and stew.
